Sample interview questions
I would decouple producers and consumers with Pub/Sub, run stateless consumers on GKE with autoscaling and multi-zone node pools, and make processing idempotent to safely handle retries. I would use dead-letter topics, structured observability, and clear SLOs, while persisting durable state in an appropriate managed store such as Cloud SQL or BigQuery depending on the access pattern.
I would first correlate latency with request volume, pod restarts, CPU and memory utilization, garbage-collection behavior, downstream dependency timing, and recent deployments. I would use distributed traces and structured logs to isolate the slow path, validate Kubernetes resource limits and autoscaling behavior, then reproduce or mitigate the issue through targeted configuration, code, query, or infrastructure changes.
I would use automated unit, integration, contract, security, and smoke tests in the delivery pipeline, package immutable container images, and promote the same artifact through environments. Deployments should use health checks, readiness gates, database migration discipline, feature flags, canary or rolling releases, and fast rollback procedures supported by monitoring and alerting.
I would choose Cloud SQL for transactional, relational application data requiring low-latency reads and writes, referential integrity, and operational queries. I would choose BigQuery for large-scale analytical workloads, aggregations, reporting, and querying large historical datasets; it is not typically the primary transactional datastore for an online microservice.
I start by assessing customer impact, stabilizing the service through mitigation or rollback where necessary, and establishing an incident timeline and ownership. I use metrics, logs, traces, and recent-change history to test hypotheses, communicate status clearly to stakeholders, and follow up with a blameless post-incident review that produces concrete preventive actions.
