About this role.
Fleetio seeks an Associate Software Engineer to develop Marketplace capabilities supporting fleet maintenance, payments, vendor interactions, billing, and related data workflows. The engineer will plan, design, implement, test, and review scalable product features in close partnership with product, design, quality, and engineering peers. The role calls for at least two years of experience with Ruby on Rails, React and/or TypeScript, object-oriented programming, relational databases, and unit testing. Success requires strong written communication, attention to quality, and sound technical tradeoff decisions in a fast-moving product environment. Experience with APIs, integrations, data modeling, marketplace systems, and query optimization is advantageous.

Sample interview questions
I would explain the user problem first, then outline how the Rails API handled validation, authorization, persistence, and business rules while the React or TypeScript client managed presentation and user interactions. I would also describe API contracts, error states, tests, and how I monitored or refined the feature after release.
I would begin by defining a stable API contract and mapping external records to internal domain models. I would use idempotent processing, validation, retries with backoff, clear failure handling, audit logs, and monitoring so repeated or delayed messages do not create duplicate transactions or corrupt service data.
I would state the constraints, alternatives, and risks, then explain the decision using expected customer value and future maintenance cost. A strong answer would include delivering a safe, well-tested smaller solution, documenting known limitations, and identifying a specific trigger for later refactoring.
I would reproduce the issue, inspect query plans with EXPLAIN or EXPLAIN ANALYZE, identify expensive joins, scans, or sorting, and confirm appropriate indexes and data access patterns. I would also consider reducing selected data, avoiding N+1 queries, revising schema or query structure where appropriate, and measuring the result before and after deployment.
I focus on correctness, security, maintainability, tests, performance, and consistency with team conventions rather than personal preferences. I provide specific and respectful feedback, ask clarifying questions where context is missing, and distinguish blocking issues from optional suggestions so reviews remain collaborative and efficient.
