The role, at a glance.
Posit is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to build and ship capabilities for Posit Team, an on-premises platform for trustworthy data science, applications, agents, and MCP servers. The role spans backend systems, data tooling, infrastructure, and AI-enabled product development, with practical proficiency in Go or TypeScript and Python or R valued. This is a high-agency generalist role that expects the engineer to prototype through ambiguity, own feature delivery, and rapidly contribute to public releases. Success also depends on user empathy, measurable product impact, knowledge sharing, and effective asynchronous collaboration in a distributed team.

Sample interview questions
I begin by clarifying the user outcome, technical constraints, and unknowns, then build a small prototype to validate the riskiest assumptions. I share the findings early with stakeholders, convert the validated approach into a scoped plan, and iterate based on real feedback until the feature is ready to ship.
I would treat auditability and user control as core requirements. The design would capture inputs, model and configuration versions, generated outputs, permissions, and execution history, while providing clear opt-in controls and a non-AI workflow for customers who cannot use AI.
I evaluate the runtime and performance needs, integration points, operational model, team expertise, and primary user workflow. Go is a strong fit for efficient services, TypeScript for web and developer-platform integration, and Python or R where proximity to data-science ecosystems and user workflows is most valuable.
I reduce risk through incremental delivery, automated tests, observability, backward-compatible interfaces, and feature flags where appropriate. I focus on the smallest valuable release, monitor its behavior in production, and use customer feedback and operational data to guide the next iteration.
I document decisions and discoveries so they are accessible asynchronously, communicate progress and risks early, and make time for thoughtful code reviews and technical discussions. I also share prototypes, demos, and lessons learned, while actively seeking feedback from teammates and users.
About this role.
About the role
Data science is in a moment of reinvention: AI-generated code and agentic workflows are changing what it means to put analytical work into production. Posit’s mission is to empower people to conduct trustworthy data analysis for themselves, their organizations, and the world at large. Posit Team is the trusted on-premises platform at the center: a place where data scientists and the organizations that rely on them can explore data, deploy applications and agents, expose and consume MCP servers, and do all of it with the visibility, accountability, and reproducibility that serious analytical work demands.
We are seeking a skilled Senior Software Engineer to join our engineering team. In this role, you will bring a builder’s instinct to a team working at the intersection of data science, infrastructure, and AI. You will help us build new capabilities and features in our product suite, including things we haven’t yet imagined possible, and you will drive those changes forward into our customers’ hands.
About you
You are an enthusiastic generalist who thrives in the face of ambiguous requirements—an engineer who is just as good at starting things as you are at finishing them. Some qualities we value most:
High agency
You are driven. When something important feels daunting or underspecified, your first instinct is to prototype to clarify the value you can deliver, rather than wait for someone to give you the answers.
Boldness in learning
You are genuinely unafraid to tackle unfamiliar subjects. You know that nobody is an expert in everything, and you don’t let unfamiliarity be a reason for not trying. You’re not afraid to ask questions and make mistakes, because learning new techniques feels like an adventure and we share what we learn as a team. Proficiency in either Go or Typescript as well as in either Python or R, and experience with backend systems, data tooling, and data science frameworks are helpful for this role. Eagerness and boldness to learn is essential.
User empathy and product sense
You make judgment calls on behalf of users with minimal up front guidance and are willing to be wrong, because you will learn. Prior domain expertise with data science as a practice may help, but it is not the only way. Regardless, you lead with empathy: you optimize for solving a real customer problem, not for technical purity.
Collaborative curiosity
You are generous. When you learn something useful, your first instinct is to share it. You teach as readily as you learn, ask questions without ego, admit what you don’t know, and lend a hand when someone’s stuck.
Interest in AI
You are interested not just in using AI in your work, but building tools for customers to use AI in their own work. You also are curious, and you question when AI is not the right answer for a particular problem. You lean on your user empathy when building: knowing that some of our customers use and love AI in data science and others don’t or are restricted from using it.
Results-driven
You are focused on delivering measurable value to customers. You have a strong technical background with a track record of shipping successful products.
Within one week, you will…
- Ship code changes that meaningfully improves the experience for our customers.
Within one month, you will…
- See your changes reflected in our public releases.
- Participate in feature planning and provide feedback.
- Feel comfortable navigating the codebase and understand how things fit together.
Within three months, you will…
- Plan features and drive their development.
- Have a track record of teaching team members; both from your expertise and things you learn as you build.
- Have a track record of learning: both from the things you learned and taught us along the way; and from listening to internal users, external users, and how our customers use our products.
Within six months, you will…
- Point to new features you built that we hadn’t even dreamed were possible.
