The role, at a glance.
Aescape seeks a senior backend contractor to establish and deliver production-ready services for third-party booking-platform integrations. The engineer will create Go service foundations, provision AWS infrastructure, implement three provider integrations, and improve internal API and infrastructure templates. This is a four- to six-month, high-ownership 1099 engagement with potential extension or conversion to a full-time backend role. The successful candidate must be US-based and available during Eastern Time core hours, while collaborating closely with backend and infrastructure teams. Strong production Golang, vendor API integration, cloud infrastructure, documentation, and handoff practices are central to the role.

Sample interview questions
I would begin by validating authentication, data models, rate limits, webhook behavior, and failure modes through documentation and sandbox testing. I would build a well-bounded adapter with retries, idempotency, observability, and contract tests, then use staged rollout monitoring to verify real-world behavior before documenting ownership and support procedures.
I would define a normalized internal domain model and an interface for provider-specific adapters. Each adapter would translate between the internal model and a vendor API while isolating vendor-specific authentication, payload mappings, pagination, rate limiting, and error handling. This enables new providers to be added without exposing provider complexity to the rest of the platform.
The choice depends on throughput and operational requirements, but I would consider containerized Go services on ECS or serverless workloads where appropriate, managed queues for asynchronous processing, a durable datastore for integration state, Secrets Manager for credentials, and CloudWatch-based logging, metrics, and alerting. I would provision these through infrastructure as code and keep the architecture proportionate to the integration workload.
I combine the available documentation with controlled sandbox calls, request and response capture, and direct communication with the vendor when possible. I explicitly document verified assumptions, build defensive validation around uncertain behavior, and add monitoring that quickly identifies schema or behavioral changes in production.
A complete handoff should include architecture diagrams, deployment and rollback steps, infrastructure ownership, configuration and secret-management guidance, runbooks for common failures, dashboards and alerts, API mapping documentation, test coverage, and a prioritized list of known limitations. I would also hold a walkthrough with the receiving engineering team and confirm they can operate the service independently.

Aescape is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer (Booking Integrations, Contract) who can stand up and ship the services that connect Aescape to third-party booking platforms. You will set up the infrastructure for our third-party integration services, build three third-party booking platform integrations, and leave behind a setup that is easy to maintain. This is a contract engagement of 4 to 6 months with the possibility of extension or conversion to full time.
This role requires availability in core business hours Eastern Time (11am to 5pm ET) for candidates based anywhere in the US.
What You’ll Do
Review Aescape’s service and infrastructure templates and set up a skeleton service that follows our template Go service and best practices
Set up the infrastructure for running the third-party integration services so ongoing maintenance stays light
Implement each booking platform integration within this infrastructure, communicating with Aescape’s general third-party booking integration service (3 total third-party platforms in this contract)
Work actively with the Aescape backend and infrastructure teams, giving feedback that improves the Aescape API and infrastructure template
Set up an infrastructure maintenance plan and hand off the work at the end of the engagement
Potential for future work: fixing integrations when third parties introduce breaking API changes, adding more booking providers, priority consideration when expanding the full-time roles on the backend team
What You’ll Bring
5+ years of backend engineering, with recent production Golang experience
Experience building and shipping third-party API integrations in production, ideally booking, scheduling, payments or CRM systems
Experience taking a service from skeleton to production and handing it off with clear documentation
Comfort working with vendor APIs that are inconsistent or thinly documented
Experience with AWS and infrastructure setup for backend services
A track record of working independently, as a contractor or in a role with high ownership
Based in the United States and able to work as a 1099 independent contractor
Compensation: $150 per hour as a 1099 independent contractor, for an engagement of 4 to 6 months.
