Sample interview questions
How would you prioritize the first construction segments Flex should target?

I would segment the market by owner liquidity needs, payment-cycle complexity, addressable revenue, and distribution access. I would initially prioritize segments with concentrated influencer networks, such as specialty contractors and larger regional general contractors, then validate the choice through interviews with sureties, lenders, ERP vendors, and owners.

Which partnerships would you pursue first to bring construction owners to Flex at scale?

I would evaluate surety brokers, construction lenders, trade associations, construction ERP platforms, buying groups, and sponsor-backed contractor portfolios. My first three partnerships would be selected based on trust with the owner, member concentration, economics, implementation complexity, and the ability to create an enduring referral or embedded-product channel.

How do pay applications, retainage, and bonding affect a contractor's banking needs?

They create uneven cash conversion and a need for reliable liquidity, payment visibility, and credit structures that reflect contract timing rather than simple monthly revenue. A compelling banking offer must account for delayed collections, payroll and equipment obligations, bonding capacity, and the documents that support underwriting.

How would you manage the sector P&L during the first two years?

I would build a weekly operating model tracking sourced owners, activated accounts, deposits, card spend, credit utilization, revenue, partner economics, conversion rates, and acquisition costs. I would use the model to set coverage priorities, stage hiring, quantify product gaps, and ensure investment in partnerships and distribution is tied to measurable revenue outcomes.

Describe how you would influence product leadership without directly managing the product team.

I would translate customer evidence into a prioritized, economically grounded product agenda. For each request, I would define the target segment, revenue impact, urgency, competitive consequence, implementation dependency, and the specific owner or partnership opportunities unlocked, then maintain a regular decision cadence with product, risk, credit, and member-experience leaders.

Opportunity details

About this role.

Flex is building the AI-native private bank for business owners.

We’re re-architecting the entire financial system for entrepreneurs—from the first dollar a business earns to how that value compounds, moves, and is ultimately spent in real life. Banking, credit, payments, personal finance, and financial operations—rebuilt from the ground up as a single, intelligent system. Flex is the full financial home for ambitious owners.

Since launching publicly in September 2023, Flex has scaled from zero to nine-figure annualized revenue, with a clear path to profitability by late 2026. We move fast, ship relentlessly, and operate with extreme ownership.

Our customers are affluent business owners ($3–$200M in revenue)—the backbone of the economy and one of the most underserved segments in finance. They’re stuck with outdated banks and fragmented tools. We’re replacing all of it. The opportunity is massive: a ~$1T+ revenue market hiding in plain sight. Our ambition is to build a $100B+ company by delivering a product that is fundamentally better—not incrementally improved.

Flex has raised $100M+ in equity and $300M+ in debt.

– Mission-critical problems: We build software that directly controls how money moves at scale.

– High bar, low ego: Small teams, exceptional people, real ownership.

– Speed over comfort: We prioritize execution, quality, clarity, and results.

– Enduring impact: What we’re building will define how a generation of owners runs their businesses.

We hire exceptional people who want to build hard things and see their work matter immediately. Roles are available in: San Francisco, Miami, New York, and fully remote.

Flex Fuels Ambition.

About The Role

Flex is hiring a General Manager to build and run its construction business. You own the sector end to end: the strategy for winning it, the relationships and partnerships that open it, the product priorities it needs, and the P&L it produces. You build on Flex’s platform, balance sheet and teams, and you are responsible for making Flex the primary financial institution for construction.

The role is modeled on sector coverage at an investment bank. You decide which relationships matter, which partnerships can move hundreds of owners onto Flex at once, and what the product must deliver to win them. Flex’s product, credit, risk and member experience teams execute and service alongside you. The role reports directly to the CEO.

Construction is one of the largest and most capital-intensive owner-operated sectors in Flex’s range. Contractors, specialty trades, developers and building-products distributors carry long receivable cycles, bonding requirements and heavy equipment and payroll spend, and they decide where to bank on the advice of a small circle of sureties, lenders, associations and software vendors. The General Manager owns that circle.

What You’ll Do

  • Own the sector P&L. You are accountable for one number: owners in construction banking with Flex and the revenue they generate. You build the model behind it, report against it weekly, and answer for it.

  • Map the sector and cover it. Within 90 days you have identified the 200 people who move construction and have a coverage plan for each. From then on, that is where your time goes.

  • Originate. Bring owners and firms to Flex directly, through dinners, site visits, conferences, portfolio days and referrals. You represent Flex in your sector and you are expected to be present in it.
  • Structure the partnerships that move the sector. A surety or construction-lender referral program. A trade association. A franchisor or buying group. A construction ERP integration. A sponsor rolling Flex across a portfolio of contractors. You identify them, negotiate them, and own the relationship after signature.

  • Set the product agenda for your sector. You tell product leadership what owners require before they will move their primary banking relationship, in what order, and why.

  • Build the team as the book grows. You begin with Flex’s account executives, account managers and member experience team supporting you. When the pipeline exceeds what one person can cover, you hire and lead your own sector team.

  • Work AI-native. Research, relationship tracking, outreach and modeling run on tools you build or adopt, so your time goes to relationships.

Requirements

  • 7 to 12 years in investment banking, private credit, private equity, venture, or a senior commercial seat inside construction. You have a demonstrable record of originating business, not servicing it.
  • An active network in construction. You can name the 50 people who matter and most of them would take your call this week.

  • Fluent in how contractors are paid and where their capital gets tied up: margins, working capital, pay applications, retainage, bonding, and who lends against each.

  • Comfortable structuring partnerships, negotiating referral economics, and working through a term sheet without support.

  • You build your own models. Banker-level Excel and a working understanding of the unit economics of deposits, cards and credit.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in fintech, banking or lending, or selling a financial product to business owners.
  • A standing in construction: a podcast, a newsletter, a conference stage, or a board seat at a trade body.

  • Investing, advisory or operating experience in a company in construction.

How To Prepare

As part of the application, please be prepared to submit a one-pager along with your CV on how you would bring construction to Flex. It should cover:

  • The sector and its owners. Who they are, how many of them fall in Flex’s range, how they make money and where their capital gets tied up.

  • What they need from a bank. The products and terms that would make owners in the sector move their primary relationship, and in what order.

  • The map. The 20 to 30 people and institutions that move the sector, and how many of them you know personally

  • The first three partnerships. The programs that would put hundreds of owners on Flex at once, and why each counterparty would say yes.

  • The investment and the return. A light P&L for the sector: what Flex would need to put in over the first two years (people, product, partnership economics, marketing) and how that investment comes back, in the form of owners banking with Flex and the revenue they produce. We are looking for the shape of the business and the logic behind it.

  • The plan and the team. How you will build this out and you will need to do it.

  • Treat it as a coverage pitch. Bring the map, the partnerships and the economics, and be ready to defend each one.

Compensation

Compensation follows the coverage-banking model: a base that allows you to build the book without pressure to pursue the wrong relationships, and variable tied to what your sector produces for Flex, with no ceiling.

  • Base salary. $275,000 to $325,000, adjusted for location and experience.

  • Variable. Targeted at 100% of base. Paid on the revenue your sector generates, including owners sourced through your partnerships.

  • Equity. Eligible for equity compensation

  • First year. A guaranteed variable component while the book is built, agreed at offer.

Final compensation within this range will be based on experience, qualifications, and interview performance. This position is also eligible for equity compensation. Flex offers medical, dental and vision insurance, paid time off, and a 401(k) plan. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the position is filled.
