Sample interview questions
How would you build a government sales pipeline from zero during your first six months?

I would first prioritize agencies based on mission fit, current inbound signals, budget availability, and the accessibility of relevant stakeholders. I would develop account plans for the highest-value agencies, map users, influencers, procurement teams, and executive sponsors, then run coordinated outreach with SDR and marketing support. In parallel, I would identify the appropriate contract vehicles and channel path, establish measurable pipeline targets, and review conversion data weekly to refine the approach.

Describe how you navigate a complex federal procurement process.

I begin by qualifying the agency's mission need, funding source, acquisition timeline, stakeholders, and preferred purchasing vehicle. I maintain a mutual action plan that aligns technical validation, security or compliance milestones, contracting requirements, and executive approvals. I also involve channel partners early when they can simplify purchasing, while preserving direct engagement with the program and economic buyers.

How do you communicate the value of a complex AI platform to non-technical government stakeholders?

I start with the stakeholder's mission outcomes rather than product features. I use their workflow and current information challenges to show how faster, defensible research and insight generation can improve decision quality, reduce manual effort, or accelerate response times. I tailor the message for each audience, pairing practical examples for end users with measurable impact and risk considerations for leadership.

What would you do when a legacy provider is deeply established at an agency?

I would avoid treating the incumbent relationship as a reason not to compete. I would identify gaps in the current solution, validate them through discovery with end users and sponsors, and position a focused proof of value around the highest-priority use case. I would then build a business case that demonstrates differentiated outcomes, adoption support, and a practical procurement path for switching or expanding.

How do you forecast accurately in a territory with long and variable government sales cycles?

I use stage definitions tied to verifiable customer actions, such as confirmed need, identified funding, stakeholder access, procurement-path clarity, and an agreed next step. I separate early pipeline from commit opportunities and document risks, dependencies, and close-plan milestones for every material deal. Regular deal reviews and a realistic view of procurement timing help keep the forecast credible while ensuring enough coverage for quota attainment.

Reports To: SVP of Corporate Sales

About the Team:

The extraordinary AlphaSense Sales team is split into two parts: Financial Services and Corporates. The Financial Services Sales Team focuses on sales to hedge funds, asset management, investment banking, and private equity. The Corporate Sales team is verticalized with a focus on the Fortune 1000 in the following sectors: Life Sciences, Technology, Media, and Telecom, Energy and Industrials, Consulting, and Consumer Packaged Goods. Both teams have Enterprise and Mid-Market sales professionals, and an additional team focuses exclusively on Investor Relations.

We are now launching a Government & Public Sector vertical, and this role is our first dedicated seller.

About the Role:

We are looking for an experienced, entrepreneurial, and driven government sales professional to be our first boots on the ground in the public sector. AlphaSense already earns meaningful inbound government revenue, entirely unsolicited, and our product consistently stacks up against legacy providers, who are winning multi-million dollar competitive contracts in this space. We have never had a seller pursuing government business directly. You will be the first.

You know how government sales works: how agencies buy, who influences the decision, how procurement vehicles and channel partners fit in, and how long it really takes. You will use that knowledge to open doors at priority agencies and create pipelines from zero, converting early interest into the first wave of direct deals. This is an opportunity to join a high growth company, sell an award-winning product experiencing rapid adoption, and make a major contribution to our growth and future success.

Who You Are:

  • A government sales pro: You have 5+ years of experience selling into federal or public sector agencies and understand the buying process, budget cycles, procurement vehicles, and the people who influence and approve purchases. You’ve started from an empty pipeline before, or can clearly articulate how you would.
  • Agency-savvy: You understand, and ideally have relationships within, our priority agencies.
  • Channel-fluent: You are familiar with working through Carahsoft or similar government channel partners (a strong plus).
  • A hunter: You love to sell and thrive in a high-velocity, hypergrowth environment. The pace of legacy providers won’t work here.
  • Value-based seller: You have strong value-based selling fundamentals and can articulate your version of the “science of sales.”
  • A strong communicator: You can explain complex data and concepts to non-technical audiences and communicate present and future value to stakeholders at all levels, from analysts to senior executives.
  • Intellectually curious: You ask the right questions and uncover mission needs and challenges at all levels of an agency.
  • Tenacious and coachable: You are hard-working with a ‘never give up’ attitude, open to feedback, and resourceful in getting things done where no playbook exists.

What You’ll Do:

  • Be the first AlphaSense presence at priority agencies, including Commerce, Defense, Energy, Labor, Justice, Treasury, the Federal Reserve, and FDIC, and generate pipeline from scratch through your own outreach.
  • Take responsibility for the end-to-end sales process: research opportunities, prospect, build relationships, conduct demos, manage product trials, and most importantly: close deals! No task is too small or too large.
  • Navigate agency buying processes, stakeholders, and procurement vehicles, and work with Carahsoft (or an equivalent partner) once compliance milestones are met.
  • Follow up on existing inbound government customers and interest, turning it into expansion and competitive wins against legacy providers.
  • Partner with SDRs, Marketing, and sales leadership to create prospecting plans and drive pipeline.
  • Forecast accurately and develop the necessary pipeline to meet/exceed quota.
  • Work closely with our Product Specialist team during trials to ensure client engagement and ultimate purchase.
  • Work closely with Account Management to ensure customer health throughout the contract term, as well as closing sourced upsell and cross-sell opportunities.
  • Gather and distribute product feedback and government-specific requirements to the sales and product teams to help us continually enhance our offerings.

For base compensation, we set standard ranges for all roles based on function and level benchmarked against similar stage growth companies and internal comparables. In order to be compliant with local legislation, as well as to provide greater transparency to candidates, we share salary ranges on all job postings regardless of desired hiring location. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience/expertise and may vary from the amounts listed below.

We offer a competitive benefits program, a generous commission plan with uncapped earning potential as well as equity.

$105,000—$140,000 USD
