Sample interview questions
How would you translate a high-level credit risk appetite into operational lending policy?

I would begin by aligning on target return, loss, approval, and growth constraints, then convert those guardrails into approval cutoffs, verification rules, pricing or offer boundaries, and exception governance. I would establish monitoring thresholds and a recurring review cadence so policy can be adjusted quickly when portfolio outcomes diverge from plan.

Describe how you would evaluate whether a proposed underwriting expansion should be launched.

I would define the expected incremental approvals, revenue, losses, fraud exposure, operational costs, and capital implications by segment. I would recommend a controlled experiment with clear success metrics, guardrails, sample-size expectations, and rollback triggers before moving to broader implementation.

What metrics would you use to monitor credit and fraud performance?

For credit, I would track approval rate, conversion, booked volume, delinquency, charge-off and net loss rates, vintage curves, payment behavior, and forecast variance. For fraud, I would monitor application fraud, identity and account-takeover signals, false-positive rates, manual-review outcomes, and losses by channel, cohort, and control.

How would you communicate an adverse change in portfolio performance to capital partners?

I would communicate early, clearly, and with quantified evidence. The discussion would cover the affected cohorts and drivers, the variance against expectations, the corrective policies or controls already implemented, expected timing of impact, and the forward-looking loss forecast under relevant scenarios.

How do you ensure that credit strategy remains compliant with fair-lending requirements while pursuing growth?

I would involve Legal and Compliance throughout policy design and testing, maintain documented decision criteria and model governance, and routinely assess outcomes for potential disparate impact. Growth initiatives should have pre-launch compliance reviews, auditable monitoring, and clear escalation procedures for material findings.
