Sample interview questions
I would first establish the impact and baseline by reviewing request volume, source distribution, paths, methods, status codes, user agents, and latency. I would correlate edge and application logs to distinguish abusive patterns from legitimate surges, then apply targeted rate limits, WAF rules, or bot controls while monitoring for false positives. I would document the timeline, mitigations, residual risk, and recommendations in an after-action report.
I begin with observed request samples and validate the rule against legitimate application workflows, APIs, known partners, and expected user behavior. I prefer narrowly scoped conditions based on multiple signals, use logging or count mode where available, and monitor outcomes before enforcing a block. Any exception should be justified, time-bound where possible, and reviewed with the customer.
I would look for elevated login attempts across many accounts, repeated failures, low request variance, IP or ASN concentration, rotating IP patterns, unusual user agents, and automation-like timing. I would also compare successful versus failed authentication rates and examine whether requests bypass normal browser behavior. Controls could include rate limiting, bot detection, device or session signals, and targeted challenges.
I would state what is happening, the customer impact, the actions already taken, and the next update time in plain language. For example, I would explain that we identified malicious traffic targeting a specific endpoint and have deployed controls that are reducing the impact while we continue to monitor. I would avoid unnecessary jargon, be transparent about uncertainty, and provide clear recommendations after stabilization.
I have used scripting to parse structured JSON or CSV logs, normalize indicators, aggregate requests by IP or endpoint, and flag threshold breaches for investigation. A useful workflow produces repeatable outputs, handles malformed data safely, and preserves enough context for analysts to validate results. I would version the script, document its assumptions, and integrate it with alerting or reporting only after testing it against known cases.
