The role, at a glance.
Mozilla is seeking a senior contract data analyst to improve the reliability and business usefulness of Gecko browser-engine telemetry. The role builds leadership-facing dashboards, audits telemetry collection gaps, and develops methods to remove bot and hardware-related noise from performance data. The analyst will connect technical measures such as LCP and eTLD+1 with user experience and engagement outcomes across desktop and Android. Success requires advanced SQL, statistical analysis, visualization, browser-platform fluency, and the ability to work independently with engineering, data, product, and leadership stakeholders.

Sample interview questions
I would start by profiling anomalous event patterns, request cadence, user-agent and device signals where available, session duration, and feature-use distributions. I would develop transparent filtering rules, validate their impact against known-good cohorts, and monitor exclusion rates so the framework does not remove legitimate users.
I would first validate the telemetry pipeline and compare pre- and post-release distributions by platform, version, hardware class, geography, and key page or workload cohorts. I would then correlate the change with release metadata and user engagement signals, quantify uncertainty, and present likely drivers along with recommended follow-up instrumentation or experiments.
I use a layered design: a concise executive overview with trends, guardrails, and clear interpretations, followed by drill-down views for technical segmentation and diagnostics. I align metrics and thresholds with concrete decisions, document definitions, and make data quality limitations visible.
I would map the user journey and performance hypotheses to existing event schemas and code paths, then compare the signals needed for each decision against what is currently collected. I would review source code and documentation with engineering partners, propose minimally invasive probes, and define validation criteria before rollout.
I establish a structured learning plan using documentation, source code, exploratory queries, and conversations with subject-matter experts. I turn ambiguity into testable questions, share early findings and assumptions, and iteratively refine the analysis while maintaining clear documentation of decisions and limitations.
About this role.
The Gecko platform is the core engine of our product experience. To maintain competitiveness and user satisfaction, we must move beyond surface-level metrics to understand the deep correlations between engine performance and real-world user behavior. We currently face challenges with data quality, such as bot contamination in nightly telemetry, which obscures our understanding of true performance trends. A dedicated analyst is required to bridge the gap between engineering telemetry and actionable product strategy, ensuring that leadership has high-fidelity data to prioritize performance guardrails and technical budgets.
Engineering Deliverables
- Automated Dashboards: Create and maintain high-level overview dashboards that translate complex performance data into consumable formats for Product Managers and leadership.
- Telemetry Gap Analysis: Audit the Gecko codebase to identify missing collection points or “probes” necessary for a complete understanding of the product experience.
- Data Sanitization Frameworks: Develop methodologies and tools to identify and filter data inconsistencies, specifically focusing on isolating bot traffic and hardware-specific noise from telemetry streams.
- Behavioral Inference Reports: Deliver deep-dive analyses correlating technical performance shifts (e.g., LCP, eTLD+1) with user-facing pain points and engagement trends.
Scope, Skills, and Effort Estimate
Scope
The analyst will focus exclusively on Gecko engine telemetry across multiple platforms (Desktop and Android), collaborating with the Performance Team, Data Team, and Product Leadership.
Required Skills
- Technical: Advanced SQL (BigQuery/Redash), proficiency in data visualization using AI tooling, and experience with statistical analysis (e.g., Pearson’s correlation, multivariate analysis). Knowledge of Rust/C++ is a strong plus. Strong proficiency with AI tools like Claude Code, Codex, or similar is highly desirable.
- Domain Knowledge: Ability to understand browser component interactions and their impact on user experience.
- Soft Skills: Proven ability to work independently, translating technical requirements into business insights.
- Independent problem solving: Comfortable working in unfamiliar technical problem spaces and figuring out a path forward with minimal guidance, using documentation, experimentation, source code, data, and other available resources.
