Sample interview questions
I would begin with business outcomes, data domains, volume, latency, security, and governance requirements. I would define ingestion paths for batch and streaming data, use a governed storage and lakehouse layer, select scalable processing engines, and expose curated data through fit-for-purpose access layers. The design would include observability, data quality controls, IAM and network segmentation, infrastructure as code, disaster recovery, and FinOps guardrails.
I start with discovery of workloads, dependencies, schemas, SLAs, data quality, and operational risks. I group applications into migration waves, choose rehost, replatform, or refactor paths, establish replication and validation methods, and create a tested cutover and rollback plan. Throughout delivery, I track performance, security, availability, and stakeholder readiness so the migration is measurable and low risk.
I frame the decision around the business objective and present a small number of viable options with their cost, delivery timeline, risk, scalability, and operational implications. I use diagrams and concise decision records for technical audiences, while translating impact into outcomes for business stakeholders. I make the recommendation explicit, document assumptions, and identify what would cause the decision to be revisited.
I apply least-privilege access, encryption in transit and at rest, private networking, secrets management, audit logging, and clear data classification policies. Production readiness also includes automated deployments, monitoring, alerting, capacity planning, backup and recovery testing, data-quality checks, and documented operational runbooks. I validate these controls early through architecture reviews and non-functional testing.
I make cost a design constraint from the beginning by modelling expected storage, compute, transfer, and managed-service consumption. I use tagging, budgets, usage dashboards, lifecycle policies, autoscaling, workload scheduling, and right-sizing to keep spend visible and controllable. I also review cost and performance together regularly, because the lowest unit cost is not always the best operational outcome.
