Sample interview questions
I begin with the most common developer workflows and create a small, consistent API surface with idiomatic naming for the language. I validate the design through examples, documentation, backward-compatibility reviews, and early user feedback, while isolating internal implementation details so the library can evolve safely.
I would first reproduce the regression with representative benchmarks and compare profiles against a known-good version. I would inspect allocation rates, lock contention, network behavior, and hot paths, then make a targeted change and validate it with unit tests, load tests, latency measurements, and regression benchmarks.
I define ownership and synchronization rules clearly, avoid unnecessary shared mutable state, and use bounded retries, timeouts, backoff, and safe failure modes for external dependencies. I also test race conditions, cancellation, reconnect behavior, and degraded-network scenarios so the SDK remains predictable under stress.
I establish a language-neutral behavioral specification, including edge cases and expected telemetry, then translate it into idiomatic APIs for each ecosystem. Shared contract tests, release checklists, semantic versioning, migration guidance, and coordinated documentation help ensure consistent behavior without forcing identical implementations.
I gathered evidence such as incident data, benchmark results, implementation tradeoffs, and customer impact, then presented a concise proposal with alternatives. By inviting feedback early and adapting the plan to legitimate concerns, I helped the team reach an informed decision and supported execution after alignment.

About LaunchDarkly Engineering
LaunchDarkly helps engineering organizations ship software and AI with speed, safety, and control. Our platform gives teams the confidence to release gradually, target experiences to the right audiences, learn through experimentation, understand what is happening in production, and respond quickly when risk appears.
Our engineers build the systems, services, SDKs, developer tools, cloud infrastructure, and product experiences that make this possible. The work spans high-scale distributed systems, reliable data and event pipelines, intuitive enterprise workflows, and AI-powered capabilities that help teams manage the next generation of software delivery.
LaunchDarkly’s SDKs are used in systems that perform trillions of feature flag evaluations each day, giving our engineering work a direct connection to the reliability and customer experience of software around the world.
