The role, at a glance.
EDB is seeking a senior C developer to build and maintain Postgres Distributed, its multi-master distributed PostgreSQL product. The role covers architecture, implementation, testing, documentation, performance improvements, and production support for enterprise customers. Candidates need deep C expertise, PostgreSQL internals knowledge, and practical understanding of distributed replication, consistency, and failure scenarios. The engineer will collaborate with a globally distributed team and work in a complex long-lived codebase using Git, CI/CD, and backporting workflows.

Sample interview questions
I would first establish whether the delay originates in WAL generation, transport, decoding, apply processing, locking, or resource saturation. I would review replication metrics and logs, inspect system and database load, compare node health, and reproduce the issue where possible. I would then isolate the bottleneck and validate a fix with failure and load tests.
Key areas include WAL generation and processing, logical decoding, snapshots, catalogs, transaction visibility, background workers, and the extension and hook APIs. A safe implementation must preserve consistency, respect transactional semantics, and handle crash recovery and version compatibility.
I begin by defining the consistency model and identifying which conflicts are possible for each workload. I then select deterministic resolution rules, such as ordering or application-defined policies, while ensuring that every node converges on the same outcome. I would also expose observability and operational controls so customers can understand and manage exceptional cases.
I would keep changes focused, include regression tests, and identify the minimum compatible implementation for each branch. I would use disciplined Git workflows for review, cherry-picking, and backport tracking, while validating each backport in its target build and test environment. Clear release notes and risk assessment are important for production-impacting fixes.
I would create automated scenarios for node loss, network partitions, delayed replication, restart recovery, split-brain prevention, and rejoining nodes. The tests would verify data consistency, expected availability behavior, client-visible errors, and recovery time objectives. I would also run repeated fault-injection and performance tests to identify race conditions and resource-related failures.
