Sample interview questions
Describe an upstream ClickHouse contribution you made and the technical problem it solved.

I would explain the issue, how I investigated the relevant execution path or subsystem, the design alternatives considered, the tests and benchmarks I added, and how I incorporated maintainer feedback through the upstream review process.

How would you investigate a performance regression in an analytical query workload?

I would first reproduce and baseline the workload, inspect query plans and runtime profiles, isolate changes in statistics, storage, optimizer behavior, and resource usage, then benchmark targeted fixes with representative datasets before adding regression protection.

What considerations matter when integrating ClickHouse-based analytics with PostgreSQL systems?

Key considerations include data movement and consistency semantics, schema and type mapping, query pushdown, failure handling, observability, security, and minimizing latency and operational overhead while preserving a clear user experience.

How do you design regression tests for a database bug fix?

I create a minimal deterministic reproduction that fails before the fix, verify expected query results and error behavior after the fix, cover relevant edge cases, and ensure the test is stable across supported environments.

How have you approached reviewing complex systems-level code?

I review correctness, concurrency and memory safety, error handling, performance implications, API and architectural consistency, test coverage, and operational impact. I provide specific, actionable feedback and discuss larger design concerns early to keep reviews efficient.
