Sample interview questions
Describe a customer-facing product you took from an ambiguous opportunity to a successful production launch.

I would explain the customer problem, the assumptions we tested, and the success metrics agreed with product partners. I would then outline how I delivered an initial version, measured adoption and operational outcomes, and iterated based on customer feedback and production data.

How do you balance rapid experimentation with reliability when building a new operational product?

I separate reversible learning decisions from difficult-to-reverse platform decisions. I use small releases, feature flags, observability, rollback plans, and explicit service-level expectations so the team can learn quickly without exposing customers to avoidable operational risk.

Tell us about a time you aligned multiple engineering teams around a technical direction without formal authority.

I would start by making the customer and business constraints explicit, presenting viable options with trade-offs, and inviting early technical feedback. I would document the decision, clarify ownership boundaries, and maintain alignment through milestones and transparent communication.

How would you identify the next scaling constraint in a telematics platform?

I would combine usage forecasts with production evidence such as latency, error rates, throughput, storage growth, and support signals. I would prioritize the constraint most likely to limit customer value or reliability, then make a targeted investment with measurable success criteria.

What is your approach to mentoring senior engineers?

I provide context rather than prescribing solutions, use design and code reviews to sharpen trade-off thinking, and create opportunities for engineers to lead consequential work. I also give direct feedback and help remove recurring organizational or technical blockers so they can operate more independently.

Opportunity details

About this role.

Who we are

Samsara (NYSE: IOT) is the pioneer of the Connected Operations™ Cloud, which is a platform that enables organizations that depend on physical operations to harness Internet of Things (IoT) data to develop actionable insights and improve their operations. At Samsara, we are helping improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of the physical operations that power our global economy. Representing more than 40% of global GDP, these industries are the infrastructure of our planet, including agriculture, construction, field services, transportation, and manufacturing — and we are excited to help digitally transform their operations at scale.

Working at Samsara means you’ll help define the future of physical operations and be on a team that’s shaping an exciting array of product solutions, including Video-Based Safety, Vehicle Telematics, Apps and Driver Workflows, and Equipment Monitoring. As part of a recently public company, you’ll have the autonomy and support to make an impact as we build for the long term.

About the role
At Samsara, we’re looking for a hands-on Staff Software Engineer to help turn growing Telematics products into major businesses. Our new product bets include routing and workforce management for physical operations.
The portfolio has paying customers and early traction. You’ll help shape what comes next, working directly with customers to understand their operations, test ideas and build solutions they choose to use. You’ll stay close to the work through production, customer adoption and scale.
This is a technical leadership role with substantial hands-on engineering. You’ll define important problems and make product and technical decisions alongside Product, Design and Engineering partners. You’ll bring the judgement to move forward when requirements are incomplete, and the influence to align other teams around a clear direction.

What you will do

  • Work directly with customers and customer-facing teams to understand unmet needs, test assumptions and identify opportunities worth pursuing. Agree on success measures with Product and Design before investing in a solution.
  • Lead ambiguous initiatives end to end, from discovery and prototypes through production rollout, adoption and iteration. Use customer feedback and product data to decide what to improve, expand or stop.
  • Write and ship code on the critical path. Work across services, APIs and customer-facing experiences as the problem requires, combining technical depth with the ability to learn unfamiliar parts of the product.
  • Set technical direction for your area and align the teams needed to deliver it. Make pragmatic architecture choices that support rapid learning today and reliable growth over time.
  • Own the production quality of what you build. Design for correctness, reliability and performance, plan safe rollouts, and use operational evidence to address the constraints that emerge as usage grows.
  • Increase the effectiveness of the engineers around you through design and code reviews, mentoring senior engineers, and removing recurring obstacles to delivery. Share context and decisions so others can move independently.

About the role:

In this role, you will:

  • Champion, role model, and embed Samsara’s cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices
  • Hire, develop and lead an inclusive, engaged, and high performing team

What you will bring

  • A track record of shipping customer-facing products and growing them beyond their initial launch. You can explain your contribution to measurable outcomes such as adoption, revenue growth, retention, customer efficiency or cost to serve.
  • Strong product judgement. You have worked directly with customers, clarified poorly defined problems and made decisions using evidence, including changing direction when an initial idea did not work.
  • Deep hands-on software engineering ability, with recent experience designing, implementing and operating production systems. You can move from a prototype to maintainable software and explain the trade-offs along the way.
  • Experience scaling products and the systems behind them. You know how to identify the next constraint, balance speed with reliability, and make technical investments that support customer and business growth.
  • Technical leadership across team boundaries. You have built alignment without formal authority, made other engineers more effective, and communicated difficult choices clearly to technical and business partners.

Experience that could be useful
Experience building B2B software through an early growth stage, or working on routing, workforce management or other software for physical operations. We value evidence of learning a complex customer domain and delivering results; previous industry experience is helpful, rather than essential.

What success looks like
Customers adopt the capabilities you help build and can see the benefit in their day-to-day operations. The products remain dependable as usage grows. Your technical decisions support measurable business progress, and the teams around you can deliver more effectively because of your work.

Total Rewards

At Samsara, we build for the people who keep the global economy moving. We want owners, not passengers, which is why our rewards are designed to fuel high-impact builders. Our compensation program delivers above-market total compensation through a combination of base salary, performance-based bonus/variable pay, and equity (for eligible roles) in a high-growth public company. We meaningfully differentiate pay for our top performers, who have the opportunity to earn above-market compensation that can outpace the broader market over time.

Beyond compensation, we provide the foundations that enable long-term success: a flexible, employee-led remote model, a professional development stipend, comprehensive health and parental leave plans, and more. If you’re ready to build for the long term and own the outcome, your journey starts here.

Flexible Working

At Samsara, we embrace a flexible working model that caters to the diverse needs of our teams. Our offices are open for those who prefer to work in-person and we also support remote work where it aligns with our operational requirements. For certain positions, being close to one of our offices or within a specific geographic area is important to facilitate collaboration, access to resources, or alignment with our service regions. In these cases, the job description will clearly indicate any working location requirements. Our goal is to ensure that all members of our team can contribute effectively, whether they are working on-site, in a hybrid model, or fully remotely. All offers of employment are contingent upon an individual’s ability to secure and maintain the legal right to work at the company and in the specified work location, if applicable.
