Sample interview questions
How would you respond if a critical semiconductor becomes unavailable shortly before a prototype build?

I would immediately confirm inventory, lead time, and allocation status with authorized distributors and identify approved or technically viable alternates from the BOM and AVL. I would review form-fit-function and qualification implications with engineering, pursue stock through approved secondary channels where appropriate, and provide a clearly ranked recovery plan with timing, cost, and risk.

Describe how you manage a BOM that changes frequently during development.

I establish a controlled process linking BOM revisions, engineering-change notices, purchase commitments, and build schedules. I prioritize long-lead and single-source parts, communicate the impact of each change quickly, and maintain a live risk view so engineering and program management can make informed trade-offs.

What information do you assess when selecting a PCB or PCBA supplier for a rapid prototype build?

I assess technical capability, stackup and material support, design-rule compatibility, component sourcing capacity, test capability, quality performance, capacity, and realistic quick-turn lead times. I also validate communication responsiveness and escalation paths, since these are critical when build requirements evolve quickly.

How do you balance speed, cost, and quality when sourcing for R&D?

I first align the sourcing decision to the build objective: proof of concept, engineering validation, pilot, or production readiness. For an urgent prototype, I may accept a higher unit cost to protect schedule, while documenting the decision and planning a lower-cost qualified path for later phases without compromising required quality.

Give an example of how you would communicate a material risk to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

I would state the affected part, program milestone, probability and timing of impact, and available mitigation options in concise business language. For example, I would explain that a component's lead time threatens a build date, then present alternatives such as an approved substitute, split sourcing, an expedited order, or a design change along with the cost and schedule consequences of each.

Expected Outcomes & Responsibilities

High-Velocity Engineering Support

  • Serve as the hands-on supply chain counterpart for fast-paced electronics engineering teams working on multiple, rapidly evolving hardware projects.

  • Translate early-stage concepts, evolving BOMs, and mid-design changes into actionable sourcing steps with minimal delay.

  • Provide engineers with real-time insights on component availability, alternates, obsolescence, and quick-turn manufacturing options.

  • Identify supply issues before they become blockers and propose workaround paths immediately.

Rapid Sourcing & Procurement Execution

  • Own sourcing and procurement for electronic components, PCB fabrication, PCBA assembly, connectors, sensors, RF parts, embedded modules, and custom mechanical parts.

  • React quickly to BOM updates and design pivots, securing materials that keep prototype and pilot builds moving with minimal downtime.

  • Manage relationships with agile suppliers capable of quick-turn, small-batch production.

  • Lead efforts to find alternative components or new supply paths within hours—not weeks—when shortages occur.

Supplier Interaction & Technical Engagement

  • Work closely with electronics suppliers to understand lead time constraints, technical manufacturing capabilities, DFM implications, and opportunities for fast-track builds.

  • Support technical capability assessments of PCB/PCBA vendors, machining partners, and component distributors.

Cross-Functional Start-Up Collaboration

  • Coordinate across engineering, manufacturing, program management, and operations to remove obstacles and maintain build readiness.

  • Maintain complete visibility into prototype schedules, engineering changes, and material risks—communicating clearly and frequently.

  • Operate with a bias for action: if something is unclear, you chase it; if something breaks, you fix it; if something is missing, you find it.

Agility, Risk Management & Continuous Improvement

  • Build and maintain a living view of supply risks across all active programs; proactively propose mitigation actions.

  • Keep sourcing documentation, cost tracking, and procurement data updated even under fast-moving conditions.

  • Bring an experimentation mindset: test new suppliers, new sourcing channels, new manufacturing partners, and new tools to reduce lead times and cost.
