Sample interview questions
How would you build a rolling forecast for a SaaS company?

I would begin by aligning the revenue forecast to core operating drivers such as pipeline conversion, customer retention, expansion, pricing, and implementation timing. I would then connect revenue assumptions to headcount, hosting, sales and marketing, and other operating-cost drivers, compare results with the approved budget, and refresh assumptions regularly based on actual performance.

Describe your approach to explaining a material variance between actual results and budget.

I first validate the data and isolate the variance by department, account, period, and underlying business driver. I distinguish timing effects from structural changes, speak with the accountable business owners, and summarize the financial impact, root cause, forward-looking implication, and recommended action for leadership.

Which SaaS KPIs would you prioritize when assessing financial health?

I would prioritize ARR or recurring revenue growth, gross margin, net revenue retention, churn, customer acquisition efficiency, operating expense ratios, burn rate, cash runway, and contribution margin where applicable. The final dashboard should connect these measures to the company’s strategic plan and growth stage.

How have you made financial reporting more efficient or reliable?

I map the existing reporting workflow, identify manual data handling and reconciliation risks, and standardize data sources, definitions, and review controls. I then automate repeatable calculations or dashboards through the planning system and ERP integrations, ensuring stakeholders receive timely reports with a clear audit trail.

How would you present a recommendation to invest in a new product or growth initiative?

I would develop a business case that outlines investment requirements, expected revenue and margin contribution, timing, scenario analysis, cash impact, risks, and measurable success criteria. I would present a concise recommendation tailored to leadership, clearly separating validated assumptions from areas requiring further testing.
