Sample interview questions
How would you establish a consistent database health program across multiple product divisions?

I would first inventory database platforms, versions, criticality, ownership, dependencies, and current operational risks. Then I would define common standards for monitoring, alerting, backups, access, patching, documentation, and incident response, rolling them out in prioritized phases based on risk and business impact.

Describe your approach to validating backups and disaster-recovery readiness.

I treat successful backup completion as only the first control. I define recovery point and recovery time objectives, automate backup verification where possible, regularly restore samples into isolated environments, document recovery runbooks, and run scheduled disaster-recovery exercises with clear remediation actions.

What steps would you take when a production database begins experiencing severe latency?

I would assess user impact and stabilize the service first, then use database and infrastructure telemetry to identify whether the cause is blocking, inefficient queries, indexing, resource exhaustion, connection pressure, storage latency, or a recent change. After mitigation, I would document the root cause, implement durable fixes, and add monitoring to detect the pattern earlier.

How do you balance security requirements with engineers' need for rapid database access?

I use least-privilege role-based access, time-bound elevated access when needed, audited access workflows, and separated production and non-production permissions. I partner with engineering teams to make secure paths efficient through clear request processes, self-service tooling where appropriate, and documented standards.

How would you handle on-call support for a database environment with multiple platforms?

I would establish severity definitions, escalation paths, platform-specific runbooks, actionable alerts, and a rotation that has sufficient coverage and expertise. I would also review incidents and alerts regularly to reduce noise, automate recurring remediation, and prevent avoidable after-hours work.

The Opportunity

  • LivTech is creating a dedicated Database Administrator role to own the design, security, and performance of the databases behind all 26 products across our three business divisions. Today, no single function owns database health enterprise-wide — you’ll close that gap, working across divisional engineering teams to raise the bar on reliability, security, and performance.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, implement, and continuously monitor and optimize databases supporting all products across our three divisions.

  • Plan and maintain backup, disaster-recovery, and logical storage structures for every production database.

  • Proactively monitor database health, security, and performance, tuning systems to prevent issues before they affect users.

  • Establish consistent database standards, configuration practices, and documentation across divisions.

  • Manage patching, capacity planning, and access controls to reduce the risk of data loss or security incidents.

  • Partner with divisional engineering teams to reduce time spent troubleshooting database problems, freeing capacity for product development.

What You’ll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

  • Four or more years of experience administering production databases, including on-call support responsibilities.

  • Hands-on experience with one or more major relational database platforms: MySQL, Postgres, or Microsoft SQL Server.

  • Experience administering multiple relational database platforms and relevant certifications, such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, are a plus.
