Sample interview questions
I have managed direct-spend sourcing by translating technical specifications into competitive RFx processes, evaluating total cost of ownership, lead times, warranties, and supply risk. I partner with engineering stakeholders to validate requirements and negotiate pricing, allocation, delivery commitments, and service terms with suppliers.
I prepare by analyzing demand forecasts, benchmark pricing, supplier capacity, alternatives, and contractual risks. I structure negotiations around total value rather than unit price alone, including payment terms, volume commitments, lead times, warranties, SLAs, termination rights, and escalation mechanisms.
I would define category strategies, supplier qualification criteria, performance scorecards, and governance routines. Suppliers would be assessed on commercial competitiveness, technical capability, capacity, reliability, financial health, compliance, and responsiveness, with quarterly business reviews to address risks and improvement opportunities.
I establish a clear baseline with Finance, document the savings methodology, and distinguish negotiated savings, cost avoidance, and demand-management impact. I report results by category and initiative while confirming that technical specifications, delivery needs, and service levels remain intact.
I align stakeholders around objective decision criteria, including total cost of ownership, technical fit, availability, risk, and implementation impact. If the preferred supplier remains the best overall option, I use the analysis to support the decision; otherwise, I facilitate a structured evaluation of alternatives and negotiate the strongest achievable commercial terms.
