Sample interview questions
How would you build a driver-based forecast for a SaaS product area?

I would first define the economic drivers, such as acquisition, conversion, active users, expansion, retention, pricing, and cost to serve. I would validate historical relationships, create base, upside, and downside assumptions, and connect the operating drivers to ARR, gross margin, and cash-flow outcomes. I would review the model with product and data partners to ensure assumptions are measurable and actionable.

Describe how you would evaluate a proposed product investment.

I would clarify the customer problem, target segment, expected adoption path, required resources, and strategic alternatives. I would model incremental revenue, retention or expansion effects, implementation costs, opportunity costs, and key risks across scenarios. I would then present a recommendation that distinguishes measurable return assumptions from strategic benefits and identifies the metrics needed to reassess the decision.

Which SaaS metrics would you use to diagnose slowing growth?

I would separate the issue into acquisition, conversion, monetization, retention, and expansion drivers. Key measures would include funnel conversion, activation, paid conversion, ARPU, logo and revenue churn, net revenue retention, cohort behavior, customer lifetime value, and acquisition efficiency. I would segment results by product, customer cohort, channel, and geography to locate the source of the change.

How do you communicate a complex financial analysis to non-finance leaders?

I start with the business decision and the recommended action rather than the mechanics of the model. I use a concise narrative, a small set of decision-relevant metrics, and clearly labeled assumptions, risks, and tradeoffs. I keep detailed calculations available for review while making the executive discussion focused on choices and outcomes.

How have you used automation or AI tools in financial planning work?

I use automation to standardize data preparation, recurring reporting, variance explanations, and scenario updates, while maintaining appropriate controls and review. AI tools can accelerate research, draft narratives, surface anomalies, and help structure analyses, but I validate outputs against source data and apply financial judgment before using them in decisions. The goal is to reduce manual work and improve the speed and consistency of insights.

  • Experience supporting Product, Growth, or Monetization teams within a subscription-based or SaaS company
  • Strong understanding of SaaS business models and metrics, including ARR, conversion, retention, churn, customer lifetime value, marketing customer acquisition metrics, and unit economics
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex data and open-ended business questions into clear insights and actionable recommendations
  • Proven ability to work independently, take ownership, and create structure in fast-moving or ambiguous situations
