Sample interview questions
I begin by reviewing the client's entity structure, financial results, projected income, and major transactions. I identify applicable timing, deduction, and entity-level planning opportunities, model their impact, explain trade-offs clearly, and document an action plan that remains compliant with applicable tax rules.
I use a structured engagement tracker with filing dates, dependencies, review checkpoints, and client-document status. I prioritize work by deadline and risk, reconcile key balances early, use standardized workpapers, and communicate missing information promptly so that issues do not accumulate near filing dates.
I first validate the underlying data and compare actual performance with prior periods, budget, and relevant benchmarks. I then focus on the few drivers that matter most, such as margins, cash conversion, receivable aging, or expense trends, and translate them into practical recommendations with clear next steps.
I have used accounting software to maintain general ledgers, reconcile accounts, review transaction classifications, generate financial reports, and prepare supporting schedules. In tax-preparation systems, I emphasize complete source documentation, consistency with client books, review diagnostics, and clear workpaper support for filed returns.
I would lead with the client's goals and identify needs through informed conversations rather than a generic sales approach. By delivering responsive advice, explaining additional services in terms of their business value, and coordinating thoughtfully on proposals, I can deepen relationships while supporting ethical growth for the firm.
