Sample interview questions
Describe a 0-to-1 product experience you launched and how you established product-market fit.

I began by defining the target user problem and its urgency through qualitative research and behavioral data. I launched a focused MVP with explicit activation and retention hypotheses, reviewed results quickly, and iterated on the highest-impact friction points until the experience showed repeatable user value.

How would you prioritize opportunities that could improve homeowner and service-professional lifetime value?

I would segment both sides of the marketplace, identify the moments that most influence successful project completion and repeat usage, and size each opportunity using user impact, business value, confidence, and delivery effort. I would prioritize initiatives that improve marketplace trust, match quality, conversion, or retention while monitoring effects on both customer groups.

Tell us about a time you transformed an ambiguous idea into an approved product initiative.

I structured the ambiguity into a clear customer problem, target segment, assumptions, and measurable business case. I used research and lightweight prototypes to reduce uncertainty, aligned stakeholders on success criteria and trade-offs, and then secured the resources needed for staged execution.

How do you decide when to continue investing in an initiative versus sunsetting it?

I establish leading and lagging success metrics before launch, along with review checkpoints and decision thresholds. If evidence shows the initiative is unlikely to meet its user or business goals after reasonable iteration, I document the learning, communicate the decision clearly, and redirect capacity to higher-potential work.

How do you use AI judgment responsibly in product management?

I evaluate AI opportunities against a real user need rather than adding AI for novelty. I consider output quality, reliability, privacy, user trust, operational risk, and measurable value, then validate the experience through controlled testing and clear human fallback paths where appropriate.

We have cultivated an environment defined by radical ownership and a strong bias for action, empowering you to move fast, define your own strategy, and drive outcomes quickly. About the role

We’re looking for an entrepreneurial Product Manager who is driven by autonomy and fueled by ownership. You will be at the helm of innovation and execution, shaping industry-disrupting user experiences that simplify how millions of people confidently care for their homes and how home service professionals grow their business. What you’ll do

  • Conduct user research and lightweight tests to scope and prioritize product initiatives.

  • Transform a vague, ambitious idea into a compelling business and product case, secure resources, and lead execution with clear success criteria.

  • Champion deep learnings and insights as a core metric, valuing them alongside traditional metrics to fuel smarter, more innovative product decisions.

  • Partner with marketing, engineers, designers, data and applied scientists to ideate, prioritize and deliver great solutions for our customers and professionals.

  • Coordinate within your team and among teams at Thumbtack to ensure understanding of and alignment around projects.

  • Drive a high-impact initiative from seed to scale, ensuring sustained focus by thoughtfully sunsetting or culling initiatives that do not meet success criteria.

In order to be successful, you must bring

  • 5+ years of product management experience with a proven track record of launching impactful consumer web or mobile products that users love.

  • Excellent user-centric thinking with strong user experience and product sense, allowing you to empathize with users and craft excellent experiences.

  • Excellent analytical thinking and problem-solving skills combined with strong business acumen.

  • Outstanding teamwork and collaboration skills, capable of considering multiple perspectives and driving cross-functional alignment.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a talent for articulating complex customer problems precisely.

  • Comfort with and strong discerning judgment of AI.

Expected salary ranges

  • For candidates living in Ontario and British Columbia, the expected salary range for the role is currently $164,100.00 – $212,300.00.

Actual offered salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as calibrated job level, qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role.
