Sample interview questions
I would first define the scope using timestamps, affected sources, volumes, recent changes, and error messages. I would validate ingestion, routing, transformation, queueing, and destination stages, then reproduce the issue where possible using sanitized data. I would compare metrics and logs across healthy and affected paths, identify the likely failure domain, communicate clear updates, and document either the resolution or an escalation package with evidence.
For the administrator, I provide the technical symptoms, evidence, root cause, corrective actions, and validation steps. For an executive stakeholder, I summarize customer impact, risk, current status, ownership, and expected next milestone without unnecessary implementation detail. In both cases, I avoid speculation and set realistic expectations.
I establish an incident timeline, confirm severity and business impact, assign clear ownership, and create a regular communications cadence. I collect diagnostic information, test the most likely hypotheses safely, and identify mitigations that reduce customer impact while the investigation continues. If engineering involvement is needed, I provide concise reproduction steps, logs, configurations, and observed-versus-expected behavior.
I have used regular expressions to parse, validate, filter, and extract fields from unstructured events, while carefully testing edge cases and performance. I use JavaScript for transformation logic, troubleshooting scripts, and targeted data inspection. I document examples and limitations so customers and colleagues can safely reuse the solution.
I acknowledge the issue quickly, confirm my understanding of its impact, and state the next diagnostic action and update time. I then investigate methodically, sharing meaningful progress rather than frequent speculative updates. This keeps the customer informed while preserving the time needed for accurate troubleshooting and durable resolution.
