Sample interview questions
How would you diagnose an intermittent connectivity issue at an on-farm tower?

I would first confirm the symptoms and timing, inspect power, physical connections, and environmental factors, then review available device and network telemetry. I would isolate likely failure points, document findings and corrective actions, and escalate reproducible product issues with clear evidence.

Describe how you would manage several urgent field requests across a large territory.

I would triage requests by safety, customer impact, and operational urgency, then group visits geographically where possible. I would communicate expected response times early, keep stakeholders updated, and record recurring issues to reduce future reactive work.

What information should be included in feedback to a remote engineering team after a field hardware failure?

I would provide the device identifiers, location context, timeline, observed behaviour, logs or photos, steps already taken, environmental conditions, and the customer impact. I would separate verified facts from hypotheses and suggest whether the issue appears isolated or systemic.

How would you build a maintenance system for a new regional hardware fleet?

I would create an asset register, define inspection and preventive-maintenance schedules, establish incident categories and service-level priorities, and track parts usage. I would use the resulting data to identify common failures, improve stocking decisions, and refine procedures.

How do you maintain a strong customer experience while resolving a technical issue you cannot fix immediately?

I would acknowledge the impact, explain what is known without overpromising, and provide a clear next update time and workaround where possible. I would coordinate the appropriate internal support, keep the producer informed, and follow through after resolution to confirm the outcome.

About the role

We’re looking for a motivated, hands-on Field Ops Specialist to join our team as one of our first hardware technicians on the ground in Australia. What is the hardware? The collars and towers that are what makes us Halter. This is a rare opportunity to be part of something genuinely new.

You’ll be responsible for building an efficient operational system from the ground up, getting out onto farms, and making sure our hardware infrastructure runs without a hitch. One moment you’re diagnosing a technical issue in the field, the next you’re delivering collars to a new producer. You’ll be the go-to person on the ground, the kind of person who takes ownership and gets things done.

You’ll work closely with dedicated teams in Australia, and at Halter’s Auckland HQ. You’ll play a key role in making sure our pioneering producers in the region get an unmatched experience from day one.

What your day could look like

  • Infrastructure maintenance: Oversee the upkeep and repair of Halter’s on-farm infrastructure to keep operations running smoothly.

  • Hardware diagnosis: Diagnose issues with our hardware and feed that information back to the right team quickly.

  • Deployment support: Get out onto farms to help deploy Halter. Troubleshoot issues, support installations, and make sure things go well.

  • Field insights: Feed your learnings back clearly to our product and engineering teams, so we’re always building what matters most for Australian cattle producers.

  • On-call: Be part of our global on-call roster to support tower-related incidents and proactively find solutions in a timely manner.

  • Data analysis: Collect, interpret, and analyse data from our hardware to optimise processes and improve operational efficiency. Spot issues before they become problems.

  • Maintenance system: Help build and manage a maintenance system tailored to the Australian market.

  • Collaboration: Work closely across Halter’s teams to stay aligned and drive strong customer outcomes.

  • Travel: With producers spread across Australia, you’ll be on the road regularly. Expect 3 to 4 days a week and some nights away from home.

  • Whatever else it takes: You’ll do what needs doing to make Halter continue to succeed in Australia.

Who are we looking for

  • Hands-on experience: Practical experience with tools, electrical work, construction, networking, or equipment fitting is a must.

  • Go-getter attitude: You’re proactive, you take ownership, and you’re not afraid to figure things out on the go.

  • Strong communicator: You can translate what you’re seeing in the field into clear, actionable feedback for a remote product and engineering team.

  • Time management: You manage your own time well and get tasks done on schedule without someone looking over your shoulder.

  • Team player: You work well with people across different locations and time zones.

  • Comfortable with ambiguity: This is early-stage market entry. Things will be imperfect. You’ll thrive on that rather than be frustrated by it.

  • Commitment to excellence: You take pride in delivering the best possible service and making sure Halter’s infrastructure is always at its best.

  • Willingness to travel: You’re up for regular and sometimes spontaneous travel across the region.
