Sample interview questions
How would you investigate a customer report that their OAuth integration is failing intermittently?

I would first gather timestamps, request and response details, redacted logs, affected environments, and reproduction steps. I would validate redirect URIs, token expiry and refresh behavior, scopes, client configuration, and any network or rate-limit signals, then reproduce the issue in a safe environment. I would communicate findings and workarounds clearly while documenting the root cause and implementing or escalating a durable fix.

Describe how you would debug an issue in a customer SDK integration when you cannot directly access the customer's codebase.

I would request a minimal reproducible example, SDK and runtime versions, sanitized error output, and a sequence of API calls. I would compare the behavior against documentation and a known-good sample, inspect relevant SDK code or changelogs, and isolate whether the issue is configuration, usage, SDK behavior, or an API-side defect. I would provide an actionable fix and capture recurring findings for documentation or product improvements.

How do you balance responding quickly to a customer with conducting a thorough root-cause investigation?

I acknowledge the issue quickly, establish impact and urgency, and provide safe immediate mitigations where possible. In parallel, I set expectations for the investigation, share concise progress updates, and avoid claiming a root cause before evidence supports it. After resolution, I summarize the cause, remediation, and preventive actions for both the customer and internal teams.

What practices do you use when shipping a small fix in an unfamiliar production codebase?

I begin by understanding the relevant execution path, existing tests, ownership, and deployment process. I keep the change narrowly scoped, add or update tests that reproduce the defect, seek appropriate review, and verify observability and rollback options before release. After deployment, I monitor the relevant metrics and confirm the customer scenario is resolved.

How would you turn repeated customer questions into an improvement for the product organization?

I would identify patterns across tickets and conversations, quantify frequency and customer impact, and capture representative examples. I would propose a clear recommendation, such as updated documentation, an SDK enhancement, improved error messaging, or a product change, with expected benefit and implementation considerations. I would then close the loop by communicating outcomes to customers and ensuring the internal knowledge base reflects the solution.
