Sample interview questions
How would you build a forward-looking inventory view across multiple markets and warehouses?

I would combine current on-hand inventory, confirmed factory output, in-transit shipments, expected receipts, demand forecasts, and safety-stock targets into a time-phased model. I would review projected weeks of supply by SKU and location, highlight exceptions early, and validate key assumptions with sales, production, and logistics stakeholders.

Describe how you would allocate limited supply between markets when demand changes unexpectedly.

I would first quantify the supply gap and assess each market's projected stockout date, customer commitments, demand reliability, margin impact, and recovery options. I would present clear trade-offs, align the allocation decision with commercial leadership, then update shipment plans and communicate actions quickly to affected teams.

What metrics would you use to manage freight forwarder performance?

I would track on-time pickup and delivery, transit-time reliability, booking acceptance, space availability, exception-resolution speed, damage or claims performance, cost per shipment and per unit landed, and invoice accuracy. I would use lane-level scorecards to compare providers and maintain competitive volume splits.

How do you balance inventory availability against excess stock and freight cost?

I use agreed service levels, safety-stock policies, lead-time variability, holding costs, and forecast confidence to set inventory targets. When exceptions arise, I compare the cost of expedited freight or additional inventory with the commercial impact of a stockout, then make the decision visible with assumptions and recommended actions.

Give an example of how you would communicate an emerging inventory risk to senior stakeholders.

I would provide a concise summary of the affected item and market, projected timing and scale of the risk, root cause, available options, cost and customer impact, and a clear recommendation. I would state the decision deadline and follow up with an accountable action plan so the issue is resolved rather than simply reported.

About the Role

Getting finished collars from our factories to the right market, at the right time and at the right cost, is one of the most commercially critical things Halter does. Get it wrong and markets run short while others sit on excess stock, freight costs creep up, and customers wait.

As Global Inventory Planner, you’ll make sure that doesn’t happen. You’ll own the flow of finished goods from factory to market against the plan, hold stock on hand in every market and warehouse to target, and own our international freight from factory to destination.

You’ll be deep in the details: projecting where stock will be in every warehouse weeks ahead, planning what ships where and when, managing forwarder performance and cost, and spotting where a market will drift from target early enough to act. You’ll work alongside our Global Logistics, Procurement and Production teams, our contract manufacturers and the wider Supply Chain team, bringing the inventory view that keeps the plan honest and visible.

This is a hands-on role. You’ll pick up real projects from day one and deliver them, and you’ll build the planning rhythm and discipline that make delivering to our stock policy the normal state. As Halter expands into new markets, there’s room to grow with it.

What You’ll Do

  • Own the forward view of stock on hand and weeks of supply for every finished goods item, in every market and warehouse, built from factory output, shipments in transit and the sales pipeline.

  • Execute to our stock policy, keeping stock on hand within target for every item, market and warehouse, and flag early when the policy needs revisiting.

  • Decide what ships where, when and how, and make the trade-offs between markets when supply is tight or demand moves.

  • Own international freight from factory to market, including forwarder selection, volume splits, and mode and route decisions.

  • Set how we split volume across forwarders to get the best price and lead time, keeping competition alive on every lane so we’re never reliant on a single provider.

  • Build relationships with the people who make things happen at our forwarders, and use them to secure space, expedite and clear delays fast.

  • Build the reporting the business trusts on inventory by market and warehouse, and on freight cost by lane, market and unit landed.

  • Plan finished goods through product transitions and new market launches, so inventory never becomes the critical path.

What You Bring

  • Inventory planning experience for a physical product across multiple markets or warehouses, including owning the trade-offs between them.

  • A strong grasp of weeks of supply, safety stock, inventory targets, and how a forecast and a production schedule turn into a shipment plan.

  • Real experience managing international freight forwarders across air and sea. You know the levers that move cost and lead time.

  • Commercial instinct. You use performance data and competition to get better results from providers.

  • Sharp analytical skills. You’re fluent in the data behind an inventory plan and comfortable building your own models and reporting.

  • Strong ownership and follow-through. You keep track of every shipment and position that matters, and you close things out.

  • Clear, direct communication, whether it’s an inventory update for a senior stakeholder or an expedite request to a forwarder.

  • Low ego and comfortable with hard conversations. You handle them with honesty and good judgement about when to escalate.
