Sample interview questions
How would you prepare a ticketing platform for an unusually high-demand onsale event?

I would begin with load modelling based on expected traffic and critical user journeys, then validate capacity through realistic load tests. I would review database, cache, queue, and network bottlenecks; introduce rate limiting and graceful degradation where appropriate; and ensure dashboards, alerts, runbooks, and rollback plans are ready before the event.

Describe how you would improve observability for a distributed service running on Kubernetes.

I would define service-level indicators around availability, latency, error rate, and saturation, then instrument services with structured logs, metrics, and distributed traces. I would build dashboards that connect user-facing symptoms to infrastructure signals, establish actionable alert thresholds, and use post-incident findings to close monitoring gaps.

What principles guide your infrastructure-as-code practices?

I favor version-controlled, modular, reviewed, and repeatable infrastructure definitions. Changes should be validated through automated plans and tests, promoted consistently across environments, protected by least-privilege access, and paired with clear rollback procedures and documentation.

How do you balance developer autonomy with production reliability?

I provide paved-road tooling that makes safe behavior the easiest path: reusable deployment templates, sensible defaults, automated checks, observability integrations, and self-service documentation. Teams retain ownership of their services while platform guardrails reduce operational risk and make standards transparent.

Tell us about your approach during an on-call incident involving elevated error rates.

I first assess customer impact and stabilize the system through mitigation such as rollback, traffic controls, or capacity adjustments. I communicate status clearly, use dashboards and traces to narrow the fault domain, and document decisions throughout the response. After recovery, I lead a blameless review and prioritize concrete prevention work.
