About this role.
Mercury is one of the fastest-growing companies in fintech, and we’re building something unusual in the category: a premium brand that people genuinely want to engage with.
We’re looking for a Head of Social & Community to shape how Mercury shows up in the world and deepen our relationship with the founders, entrepreneurs, and businesses we serve. You’ll lead our work across social, community, creators and influencers, and merch — bringing these channels together to build a brand people want to participate in, not just hear from.
This is a role for someone who wants to push beyond the standard brand playbook. You’ll have the opportunity to develop campaigns, partnerships, experiences, and ideas that most financial brands wouldn’t attempt, while growing and fostering one of the most engaged customer communities in fintech. You’ll report to our Head of Brand, lead a small but mighty team, and have the opportunity to expand as the function scales.
*Mercury is a financial technology company, not a FDIC-insured bank. Banking services provided through Choice Financial Group, Column N.A., Members FDIC.
In this role, you’ll:
- Set the strategy for social and community at Mercury, connecting social, creators and influencers, and merch into a cohesive ecosystem that grows our audience, deepens engagement, and builds long-term brand affinity.
- Shape and amplify Mercury’s voice across channels, setting a high bar for the ideas, writing, creative, and experiences we put into the world.
- Develop breakthrough campaigns and programs that give people a reason to talk about, participate in, and advocate for Mercury – from an unexpected social idea to a creator partnership or piece of merch.
- Connect our community work to the broader marketing organization, partnering closely with Brand, Creative, Growth, Product Marketing, Support, and others to turn company priorities into bigger ideas and bring insights from our community back into Mercury.
- Own the goals, budgets, measurement, and operating rhythms for the function, balancing creative ambition with analytical rigor to understand what’s working and where to invest next.
- Lead, coach, and develop a multidisciplinary team of three, creating clarity across distinct areas of work and growing the organization as our ambitions expand.
What you’ll bring:
- Experience leading a team and meaningful budget across social, merch, creator or influencer partnerships, or related brand and community disciplines.
- Exceptional creative and editorial taste. You can write a great post, spot when a concept isn’t working, give incisive feedback on creative, and maintain a high bar without becoming a bottleneck.
- A systems mindset. You know how to connect channels and individual moments to a larger story, building programs that compound into brand equity rather than a collection of one-offs.
- Strong cross-functional instincts and the ability to be connective tissue across teams, bringing together different priorities while keeping the customer and community at the center.
- A bias toward ideas that break through. You’re curious about culture and the internet, challenge the standard playbook, and look for unexpected concepts, formats, and partnerships that make Mercury feel unlike other financial brands.
- Strong people leadership and the ability to hire, coach, and develop people across different disciplines while moving comfortably between strategic thinking and the details of the work.

Sample interview questions
I would begin with customer research, channel performance, and cultural listening to identify the strongest audience motivations and brand territories. I would then establish a shared narrative, clear channel roles, and a quarterly program roadmap that links content, partnerships, community moments, and merchandise to measurable brand and engagement goals.
I assess strategic fit, audience relevance, distinctiveness, execution feasibility, reputational risk, and measurement design before committing. I favor small, fast tests when uncertainty is high, then scale ideas that demonstrate meaningful signals such as quality engagement, earned conversation, creator participation, or improved brand perception.
I set clear hypotheses and success metrics without forcing every creative idea into short-term conversion measurement. Quantitative indicators such as reach, engagement quality, retention, and attributed outcomes are paired with qualitative signals including sentiment, community feedback, and cultural relevance.
I would define ownership, decision rights, operating rituals, and shared priorities so each specialist has autonomy with strong alignment. Regular coaching, constructive creative reviews, capacity planning, and targeted hiring would help the team maintain quality while expanding its scope.
I would create a consistent insight loop through recurring reports, customer-story sharing, trend briefs, and planning sessions with Brand, Growth, Product Marketing, and Support. The goal is to translate community feedback into actionable messaging, campaigns, product narratives, and customer experiences rather than treating social listening as a separate activity.
