Sample interview questions
How do you convert a production forecast into a material supply plan?

I begin by validating demand, bills of materials, inventory positions, open purchase orders, lead times, and safety-stock assumptions. I then use MRP outputs to identify net requirements, place or adjust orders, and review constraints with suppliers and production so that risks are visible early.

Describe how you would manage a clear-to-build shortage before a production run.

I would confirm the exact shortage, demand date, available inventory, incoming supply, and potential substitutes. I would immediately align production, procurement, and the supplier on recovery options such as expediting, reallocating stock, rescheduling builds, or approving an alternative component, then track actions to closure.

How do you balance inventory availability with the need to avoid excess working capital?

I segment parts by lead time, demand variability, criticality, and supply risk, then set appropriate safety stock and reorder parameters. I regularly review excess and obsolete exposure, forecast changes, and supplier performance so inventory policies remain aligned with the production plan.

What is your approach to managing difficult supplier performance issues?

I use factual data on confirmed dates, delivery performance, lead-time changes, and production impact to establish the issue clearly. I build relationships with both planners and operational leads, agree corrective actions and deadlines, and escalate promptly when the recovery plan does not protect production.

How would you support an engineering change or new product introduction from a supply perspective?

I would assess the component transition plan, supplier readiness, lead times, existing inventory, and demand timing. I would coordinate cut-in dates, last-time buys, purchase-order changes, and disposition plans to avoid line disruption while minimizing obsolete inventory and write-offs.

About the Role

Getting the right components and materials to the right place at the right time is one of the most operationally critical things Halter does. Miss it and production output slips, customers wait, and the business pays for it.

As a Material Supply Planner, you’ll make sure that doesn’t happen. You’ll own supply for a defined set of components and suppliers, work closely with our suppliers and contract manufacturers to get results, and take on the persistent problems that put production at risk.

You’ll be deep in the details: turning demand into material requirements, placing and managing purchase orders, keeping inventory in healthy shape, and finding shortages well before they reach the production line. You’ll work alongside our Hardware operations teams, including Production and the wider Supply Chain team, bringing the supply view that keeps the plan honest and visible.

This is a hands-on role. You’ll pick up real projects from day one and deliver them, and as supply planning grows at Halter, there’s room to grow with it.

What You’ll Do

  • Run the supply plan for your components, turning demand forecasts and production requirements into material requirements at the right quantities and timing.

  • Place, manage and track purchase orders, making sure they’re confirmed, on schedule and flagged early when they’re at risk.

  • Run the clear-to-build check ahead of each production build, and lead the recovery when a shortage hits.

  • Build working relationships with the people who control outcomes at your suppliers and contract manufacturers, and use them to expedite and clear delays at the source.

  • Take on the persistent supplier problems in your area, such as the lead time that keeps slipping or the part that’s always the reason we’re short, and see them through to resolution.

  • Manage inventory for your components with enough cover to protect production without tying up cash, and keep the settings behind it current.

  • Plan the supply side of engineering changes and new product introductions, including cut-in timing, last-time buys and limiting write-offs.

  • Maintain the reporting that gives an honest view of supply health in your area: coverage, on-time delivery, supplier performance and inventory position.

What You Bring

  • Supply or materials planning experience in a hardware or electronics manufacturing environment, including owning supply for a set of components or suppliers.

  • A strong grasp of material requirements planning, purchase order management, inventory control, and how demand turns into supply requirements.

  • Real experience working with a contract manufacturer. You know how factory scheduling works, what levers you have, and how to escalate when you need to.

  • Supplier relationships that hold up under pressure, built with planners and factory leads as well as account managers.

  • Sharp analytical skills. You’re fluent in the data behind a supply plan and comfortable building your own analysis.

  • Strong ownership and follow-through. You keep track of what matters and close things out.

  • Clear, direct communication, whether it’s a supply update for a senior stakeholder or an expedited request to a supplier.

  • Low ego and comfortable with hard conversations. You handle them with honesty and good judgement about when to escalate.
