Sample interview questions
I would begin with a driver-based model that connects unit demand, channel mix, pricing, promotions, returns, inventory availability, and revenue-recognition timing. I would establish a recurring process with commercial, marketing, supply chain, and demand-planning partners to refresh assumptions, reconcile actuals, and document forecast changes. The output would include a base case, scenarios, risks, and clear variance explanations for leadership.
I would first isolate the major drivers, such as volume, price, mix, timing, inventory constraints, or accounting treatment, and quantify each driver’s impact. I would present the conclusion in a concise narrative: what happened, why it happened, the expected duration, and the recommended action. Supporting detail would be available in an appendix, while the executive discussion would focus on decisions and forward-looking implications.
I would create a formal reconciliation between forecasted and booked revenue, including documented treatment for shipments, returns, deferred revenue, channel inventory, and accruals. I would partner with revenue accounting during close to investigate material differences and update forecast logic when recurring gaps emerge. Clear data definitions, version control, and ownership of assumptions are essential controls.
In a similar situation, I would map the existing manual process, identify the highest-risk or most time-consuming steps, and define standard metrics and data sources with finance and analytics stakeholders. I would then automate data refreshes and reporting where feasible, validate results against historical outputs, and roll out the solution with documentation and user training. Success would be measured by improved forecast accuracy, shorter cycle time, and better stakeholder adoption.
I focus on creating a shared fact base by making assumptions explicit, grounding discussions in data, and distinguishing known facts from judgment calls. I seek to understand each function’s operating perspective, then use scenarios to show the financial implications of alternative views. When alignment is not possible, I clearly communicate the decision needed, the trade-offs, and the owner responsible for the final assumption.
