Sample interview questions
I would first confirm the reconciliation cutoff date and source-data completeness, then trace the variance to individual transactions. I would classify it as a timing difference, missing entry, duplicate, posting error, or potential control issue; validate the conclusion with supporting records; and document and escalate any required correction.
I would map the existing workflow, identify stable inputs and business rules, and establish data-quality checks before automating calculations. Using Excel Power Query or macros, Python, SQL, or Google Apps Script as appropriate, I would create a repeatable process with exception reporting, reconciliation controls, documentation, and a manual review step.
Key principles include accrual accounting, revenue and expense recognition, matching, completeness, accuracy, proper classification, and the double-entry framework. I would also focus on ensuring that reconciliations, supporting schedules, and required journal entries are completed and reviewed before close deadlines.
I would use standardized templates, controlled source files, validation rules, duplicate checks, and tie-outs to ledger balances. I would maintain clear documentation, investigate exceptions promptly, and perform a final reasonableness review using trend and variance analysis.
A strong example would explain how I noticed a recurring manual error or bottleneck, gathered evidence on its impact, and proposed a practical solution. I would implement the improvement with stakeholder input, document the updated process, and track whether it reduced errors, cycle time, or rework.
