Sample interview questions
I would keep the service stateless, deploy multiple instances behind a load balancer, and use durable storage with replication and well-defined consistency requirements. I would make request handling idempotent, use timeouts and retries with backoff for dependencies, publish asynchronous work through a queue where appropriate, and add metrics, tracing, health checks, and load testing before release.
I first establish the impact through service-level metrics such as latency, error rate, throughput, and resource utilization. I compare the affected deployment or traffic pattern with a known baseline, then use tracing, logs, and Go profiling tools such as pprof to isolate CPU, memory, lock contention, allocation, database, or downstream dependency bottlenecks. I validate the fix with targeted benchmarks and production monitoring.
I begin by clarifying the business outcome, constraints, ownership boundaries, and non-functional requirements. I document alternatives and trade-offs in an ADR, seek input from affected teams early, and use evidence such as operational risk, scalability, security, and delivery cost to make a decision. After implementation, I ensure interfaces, migration plans, and success measures are clear to all stakeholders.
I would use a layered approach: fast unit tests for business logic, integration tests for databases and external contracts, API or contract tests for service interfaces, and smoke tests after deployment. The pipeline should enforce quality gates, run tests in isolated environments, and support progressive rollout with observability and rapid rollback. Critical workflows should also be covered by resilient end-to-end tests.
I would break the work into understandable milestones and explain the system context, failure modes, and operational requirements before implementation. I would pair on key design and debugging tasks, provide actionable code-review feedback, and encourage the engineer to document decisions and test assumptions. My goal would be increasing their independence while maintaining a safe and high-quality delivery.
