Sample interview questions
I would use a layered structure that separates test data, API clients, assertions, configuration, and reporting. I would build reusable utilities around JUnit 5 and Spring test support, keep environment-specific configuration externalized, and ensure tests can run consistently in local and CI environments.
I prioritize API tests for business rules, edge cases, integration contracts, and fast feedback because they are generally more stable and faster to execute. I reserve UI end-to-end tests for critical user journeys and frontend integration, keeping that suite focused to reduce flakiness and execution time.
I first collect logs, screenshots, traces, and timing data to identify whether the issue is test synchronization, environment instability, data dependency, or a product defect. I then remove arbitrary waits, improve deterministic setup and cleanup, use robust synchronization, and track the issue until the test is reliable rather than masking it with repeated retries.
I would establish measurable service-level expectations, create repeatable load scenarios for critical workflows, and run them regularly in an environment representative of production. For chaos testing, I would introduce controlled failures such as unavailable dependencies or pod restarts, validate system resilience, and turn findings into reliability improvements and automated checks.
I join refinement discussions early and ask for clear acceptance criteria, expected error behavior, observability needs, and test data requirements. I help identify risky paths and propose test hooks, stable identifiers, API contracts, and logging that make both automated verification and production troubleshooting easier.
