Sample interview questions
How have you used variance analysis to improve the financial performance of a project?

I compare actual revenue, costs, and progress against the approved budget and latest forecast, then investigate material variances with project stakeholders. I document the root cause, such as scope changes, timing differences, or unplanned effort, and recommend forecast or billing actions.

Describe your experience supporting month-end close and general ledger accuracy.

I prepare and review reconciliations, accruals, journal entries, and supporting schedules, while resolving exceptions before close deadlines. I also coordinate with accounting colleagues to ensure that project-level results reconcile to the general ledger and reporting outputs.

What is your approach to earned value analysis for project work?

I first validate the baseline budget, planned progress, actual costs, and operational completion data. I then calculate and review performance indicators with project leadership, identify risks to revenue or margin, and translate the findings into clear forecast and corrective-action recommendations.

How would you review a change order for a clinical trial project?

I would compare the requested scope change with the original statement of work, project budget, actual activity, and remaining forecast. I would confirm that assumptions, effort, pricing, milestones, and billing terms are documented so that out-of-scope work is appropriately captured.

How do you manage competing requests from project managers, accountants, and finance leaders?

I prioritize requests according to close deadlines, financial risk, client-billing impact, and project urgency. I communicate expected turnaround times early, maintain a clear task tracker, and escalate dependencies promptly when information is needed from other teams.
