Sample interview questions
How would you manage onboarding for several cohorts with overlapping start dates?

I would create a centralized tracker with each fellow's required steps, owners, deadlines, status, and escalation flags. I would establish recurring review cadences, send automated reminders for incomplete items, and prioritize blockers that could affect eligibility, payroll, benefits, or start dates.

Describe how you would handle a confidential onboarding issue that falls outside routine procedures.

I would document the relevant facts securely, avoid making policy decisions beyond my authority, and promptly escalate the matter to the Senior HR Business Partner. I would keep the fellow informed about next steps while sharing only the information needed by appropriate stakeholders.

What steps would you take to ensure HRIS, payroll, and benefits data are accurate before a fellow starts?

I would use a structured pre-start checklist, reconcile information across source documents and the HRIS, verify completion of employment eligibility requirements, and confirm required data with payroll and benefits partners. Before final clearance, I would review exceptions and resolve discrepancies with documented follow-up.

How have you used automation or AI to improve an HR process?

I would identify repetitive, rules-based tasks such as reminder emails, checklist updates, or document-status reporting and automate them with appropriate review controls. I would validate outputs, protect employee data, and measure whether the change improves completion rates, turnaround time, and data accuracy.

How would you provide a positive experience to a fellow who is confused about onboarding requirements?

I would respond promptly in clear, supportive language, explain the purpose and deadline for each action, and provide step-by-step instructions or relevant resources. If the question concerns policy, benefits, or a technical issue, I would coordinate with the right partner and maintain ownership of follow-through.
