Sample interview questions
How would you investigate a Splunk Enterprise performance degradation affecting multiple internal users?

I would first confirm the scope, timing, and affected search heads, indexers, or forwarders using Splunk monitoring data and system metrics. I would review resource utilization, indexing queues, search concurrency, and recent configuration or data-volume changes, then isolate the bottleneck and implement a controlled remediation with clear stakeholder updates.

How do you approach user provisioning and access control in Splunk?

I apply least-privilege access through well-defined roles, capabilities, index permissions, and authentication-group mappings. I document access requests, validate approvals, test permissions with representative accounts, and periodically review roles to remove unnecessary access.

Describe your process for resolving an ingestion issue from a data source into Splunk.

I validate connectivity and forwarder health, inspect inputs and outputs configurations, and check Splunk internal logs for parsing, routing, queue, or certificate errors. I then trace the data path from source to index, correct the failing configuration, validate event delivery and field quality, and document the root cause and preventive actions.

What factors would you consider when recommending an improvement to a large Splunk deployment?

I would assess ingestion volume, retention needs, search patterns, resource utilization, availability requirements, security controls, and operational pain points. My recommendation would balance performance, scalability, maintainability, licensing impact, and implementation risk, supported by measurable evidence and a rollback plan.

How do you communicate a complex Splunk incident to non-technical stakeholders?

I provide a concise summary of the impact, affected services, current status, mitigation steps, and expected next update time without unnecessary technical jargon. After resolution, I share the root cause, corrective actions, and any decisions or support needed from stakeholders.
