Sample interview questions
How would you investigate a sudden increase in latency for a distributed search service?

I would first confirm the scope through service-level indicators, tracing, and recent deployment history. I would isolate whether latency originates in query processing, storage, networking, resource saturation, or a downstream dependency, mitigate customer impact through rollback or capacity controls where appropriate, and document the root cause and preventative actions.

Describe how you approach operating Kubernetes workloads that handle high traffic.

I define clear resource requests and limits, autoscaling policies, health checks, observability, and safe rollout strategies. I also validate failure scenarios, monitor cluster and application saturation signals, and use capacity planning to ensure the platform remains resilient during traffic peaks.

What practices help maintain reliability in a distributed indexing system?

I focus on idempotent operations, durable state management, backpressure, retries with appropriate limits, strong monitoring, and well-defined recovery procedures. I also use automated tests and controlled deployments to detect correctness and performance regressions before production.

How do you handle an out-of-hours production incident involving multiple engineering teams?

I establish an incident lead and a concise communication channel, prioritize mitigation and customer impact, and bring in the relevant owners with clear requests. After recovery, I contribute to a blameless review that identifies technical fixes, operational improvements, and follow-up ownership.

How would you share distributed-systems expertise with a diverse remote engineering team?

I would use design reviews, concise architecture documentation, pairing, and incident retrospectives to make knowledge practical and accessible. I aim to explain trade-offs clearly, invite challenge from teammates, and turn recurring lessons into reusable standards and tooling.
