Sample interview questions
I would begin with workload, availability, latency, throughput, and regulatory requirements. I would design fault domains across compute, storage, and network layers; use Kubernetes and/or OpenStack according to workload needs; implement redundant control-plane and data-plane components; and validate the design through failure testing, capacity planning, observability, and documented operational runbooks.
I assess CPU pinning and isolation, NUMA alignment, huge pages, SR-IOV or DPDK requirements, NIC and kernel settings, storage latency, and network topology. I establish a measurable performance baseline, make controlled changes, and validate results against throughput, latency, packet-loss, and availability targets.
I would first contain the customer impact and collect reproducible evidence such as logs, configuration, versions, topology, and clear steps to reproduce. I would identify a safe workaround where possible, communicate status and risk transparently, then collaborate with engineering on prioritization, validation, and a production-safe fix.
I define repeatable, version-controlled infrastructure modules for compute, networking, storage, identity, and tenant onboarding. I use automated validation and deployment pipelines, peer review, secrets management, and environment-specific configuration to make changes auditable, consistent, and reversible.
I translate technical trade-offs into outcomes such as time to launch, service reliability, operating cost, scalability, and compliance. I confirm priorities with both technical and business stakeholders, present viable options with risks and assumptions, and recommend an incremental delivery plan that produces measurable customer value.
