We are looking for a Sr. VAT Tax Analyst. The Tax team is responsible for all global tax areas at Sonder, including worldwide tax strategy, planning, compliance, income tax provision and tax filings.

The Sr. VAT Tax Analyst will support the Tax team with all VAT and EMEA Tourism/Occupancy/Local tax matters, new city expansion, and tax controversy. 

Key Responsibilities:

• Oversee, assist and review VAT compliance for multiple EMEA jurisdictions, ensuring that VAT returns comply with local regulations, and are filed and paid on time.
• Oversee hotel taxes in EMEA, such as, tourism/occupancy/local taxes, tax based on revenue, and property/council taxes.
• Gather, review and analyse data from the ERP systems necessary for the VAT filings  ensuring accuracy and completeness. This includes undertaking various pre-checks of the data for any discrepancies, investigate issues and ensure corrective actions. 
• Working closely with other members of the team regarding VAT matters and compliance.
• Carrying out quarter-end Balance Sheet reconciliations and posting journal entries.  
• Support VAT audits by preparing relevant documentation, answering queries, and assisting with audit-related requests. Assist in the development and implementation of internal controls to ensure compliance with VAT regulations.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date records and documentation of VAT returns, transactions, and supporting schedules for audit purposes. Ensure that the VAT filing process is efficient, well-documented, and easily accessible for internal review and external audits.
• Working with the local internal teams and provide VAT and tourist tax advice, particularly in relation to cross-border transactions, intercompany charges, and new business initiatives. Monitor and analyze changes in VAT regulations and advise the business on potential impacts and necessary adjustments.

WHAT WE LOOK FOR:

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field. A VAT certification or professional qualification is highly preferred (e.g., ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or similar).
• Experience:
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in VAT compliance and advisory, specifically within the EMEA region. Strong understanding of EMEA VAT regulations, reporting requirements, and practical application.
  • Experience working with VAT compliance systems, preferably with tax engines or ERP systems.
• Skills:
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to liaise with internal stakeholders and external tax authorities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
• Languages: Fluency in English is required. Additional languages spoken in the EMEA region (e.g., French, German, Spanish, etc.) are a plus.
