Job Description

Be a part of the broader Global Litigation area of responsibility in an in-house counsel role for Law Department’s Claim Litigation team, which provides legal advice and counsel to the Company’s Claims Organization. Claim Litigation primarily manages matters involving allegations of bad faith and extra-contractual exposure against the Company.
Claim Litigation Counsel will be expected to provide advice and counsel to the Claims Organization regarding insurance claims of heightened exposure, complex extra-contractual matters, bad faith, and other major claim-related litigation. This role will partner closely with other teams within the Law Department in providing legal advice and counsel to the Claims Organization and other business entities.
The ideal candidate will have at least 7 years of relevant substantive experience in a law firm or in-house legal department related to insurance defense work, and some experience managing or litigating bad faith or extra-contractual allegations. In addition, the successful candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong judgment, strong research and writing skills, and an eagerness to be involved in a dynamic company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee first and third-party claims of heightened exposure, complex extra-contractual matters, bad faith, and other major litigation related to insurance claims.
  • Perform extra-contractual analysis based on factual and legal issues.
  • Provide advice to the Claims Organization on extra-contractual and bad faith issues, recommendations for resolution, and strategies to mitigate risk related to insurance claims.
  • Prepare and present recommendations for settlement of claims where there is extra-contractual risk.
  • Work closely with outside counsel and the Claims Organization in the oversight of high exposure and complex claims in litigation.Β 
  • Work with business colleagues and other in-house legal teams to develop and implement recommendations related to the handling of claims.
  • Provide advice and counsel to the business with respect to litigation strategies and on emerging legal issues and risks.

Education

  • Juris Doctorate and active law membership and in good standing within state of practiceΒ 

Functional Skills

  • Project management skills and law firm/vendor management experience
  • Able to interact with all levels of personnel and supervise/oversee the work of more junior resources
  • Utilizes subject matter expertise to coach and guide less experienced team members
  • Computer skills, including MS Office suite, used in or related to the tasks performed
  • LexisNexis or similar experienceΒ 
  • Insurance Defense experience (required)

Compensation

Compensation offered for this role is $104,000.00 – 187,625.00 annually and is based on experience and qualifications.
