Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to express my strong interest in the Junior Systems Administrator position at MANTECH. With a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology and foundational experience in Windows, Linux, and VMware environments, I am eager to contribute to the CASTLE-NET Program and support the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' IT needs. My hands-on experience with scripting languages like PowerShell and Bash, along with a commitment to maintaining security and performance, aligns well with the responsibilities outlined.

I hold a Security+ certification (IAT Level II) and am prepared to obtain a Secret clearance. I am drawn to MANTECH's mission of safeguarding the nation through innovative technology and am excited about the opportunity to work remotely while delivering world-class IT support. Thank you for considering my application; I look forward to discussing how I can add value to your team.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Describe your experience with Windows Server and Linux administration. What are the key differences you've encountered?
I have experience managing Windows Server environments including Active Directory, Group Policy, and DNS. For Linux, I've worked with Red Hat and CentOS, focusing on user management, file permissions, and shell scripting. Key differences include the command-line interface focus in Linux versus GUI tools in Windows, and package management (yum/apt vs. MSI).
How do you approach troubleshooting a server performance issue?
I start by checking system resources (CPU, memory, disk I/O) using tools like Task Manager or top. Then I review logs (Event Viewer or syslog) for errors. I identify recent changes and test connectivity. If needed, I use performance monitoring tools to pinpoint bottlenecks and apply fixes like restarting services or adjusting configurations.
Explain your understanding of virtualization technologies, specifically VMware vSphere.
VMware vSphere is a hypervisor that allows multiple virtual machines to run on a single physical host. I understand how to create and manage VMs, configure resource allocation (CPU, memory), and use features like vMotion for live migration. I also know about snapshot management and high availability clusters.
Can you walk us through a time you automated a repetitive task using a scripting language?
In a previous internship, I used PowerShell to automate user account creation in Active Directory. The script imported a CSV file, created user objects, set initial passwords, and added users to security groups. This reduced manual effort by 80% and minimized errors.
What security measures do you consider important when administering systems?
I prioritize regular patch management, enforcing strong password policies, and disabling unnecessary services. I also use firewalls, implement least privilege access, and monitor logs for suspicious activity. Compliance with standards like NIST and maintaining IAT Level II certification ensures I stay updated on security best practices.
