Network Engineering Palo Alto Firewalls Cisco Switching BGP OSPF Meraki VPN Data Center Colocation Python

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am excited to apply for the Software Engineer II, Network Operations position at Marqeta. With over 4 years of hands-on experience in enterprise network infrastructure, including deploying Palo Alto firewalls, managing Cisco switches, and configuring routing protocols such as BGP and OSPF, I am confident in my ability to contribute to your team. My background also includes extensive work in colocation environments and with Meraki cloud-managed networking, aligning perfectly with the role's requirements.

I am particularly drawn to Marqeta's Flex First culture and its commitment to innovation in payment technology. I thrive in collaborative, cross-functional settings and am adept at troubleshooting complex network issues while maintaining clear documentation. I look forward to the opportunity to bring my technical skills and problem-solving mindset to support Marqeta's infrastructure.

Thank you for your consideration. I am eager to discuss how my experience aligns with your needs.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Describe your experience with deploying and managing Palo Alto firewalls in a colocation environment.
I have deployed Palo Alto firewalls in multiple colocation facilities, configuring security policies, NAT rules, and VPN tunnels. I also managed firmware upgrades and monitored traffic using Panorama.
How do you troubleshoot a complex network issue involving BGP routing and firewall policies?
I start by checking BGP neighbor status and route advertisements, then verify firewall rules to ensure traffic is not blocked. I use tools like tcpdump and Wireshark to analyze packet flow, and systematically isolate the problem.
Explain your experience with Meraki cloud-managed networking and how you handle site-to-site VPN configurations.
I have configured Meraki MX appliances for SD-WAN and site-to-site VPN using AutoVPN. I manage VLANs, firewall rules, and traffic shaping through the Meraki dashboard, and troubleshoot connectivity issues via event logs.
How do you approach documenting network infrastructure and changes?
I maintain accurate diagrams using tools like Lucidchart, update configuration backups, and document changes in a runbook. I also use version control for scripts and ensure documentation is reviewed by peers.
Describe a time you had to work with ISPs or card networks to resolve a connectivity issue. What was the outcome?
I worked with Equinix to troubleshoot a latency issue caused by a misconfigured cross-connect. After coordinating with their NOC, we identified the problem and restored optimal performance, reducing latency by 30%.
