Dear Hiring Team,

I am writing to express my strong interest in the Country Regulatory Manager position at Syngenta. With over 5 years of experience in regulatory affairs for crop protection products and a comprehensive understanding of EU and Portuguese frameworks, I am confident in my ability to lead the registration lifecycle effectively. I have successfully managed complex submissions, maintained robust relationships with national authorities, and delivered results under tight deadlines. I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to Syngenta's mission of sustainable agriculture and look forward to discussing my fit further.

Sincerely, [Your Name]

Can you describe your experience with EU regulatory frameworks for crop protection products?
I have worked extensively with EU Regulation 1107/2009 and its implementation in national laws. I managed submissions for active substances and plant protection products, ensuring compliance with data requirements and timelines. I also coordinated with national authorities for approvals and monitored regulatory changes to anticipate impacts on the portfolio.
How do you handle multiple registration dossiers and competing deadlines?
I prioritize tasks based on urgency and business impact, using project management tools to track milestones and deadlines. I regularly communicate with internal teams and authorities to ensure alignment and proactively address potential delays. For example, I once managed 10 simultaneous re-registration projects by delegating tasks and holding weekly check-ins.
Describe a time you built a productive relationship with a government authority. How did you achieve that?
I established a regular dialogue with DGAV by providing clear, timely responses to their queries and sharing relevant scientific data. I attended industry meetings to understand their priorities and demonstrated transparency. This led to faster evaluation times and early warnings on regulatory shifts.
How do you stay updated on regulatory changes and communicate their impact to the commercial team?
I subscribe to EU and national regulatory newsletters, participate in industry associations like CropLife, and attend workshops. I create quarterly reports summarizing key changes and their implications for the portfolio, and I present these to the commercial team with actionable recommendations.
What is your approach to managing labels and compliance for multiple products?
I maintain a centralized database for labels, ensuring updates align with regulations and authority approvals. I conduct periodic audits to verify accuracy and coordinate with labeling teams. For new registrations, I review draft labels against requirements and seek early authority feedback to avoid rework.

About Syngenta
At Syngenta Crop Protection, we’re pioneering solutions that safeguard global food security while championing sustainable agriculture. As a world market leader headquartered in Switzerland, we empower farmers with innovative crop protection technologies that defend against nature’s toughest challenges. We unite advanced science with digital solutions to develop intelligent crop protection that maximizes yields while minimizing environmental impact. Join our mission of revolutionizing plant protection from seed to harvest.

Job Description

Syngenta is one of the world’s leading agriculture companies, helping farmers grow more with less. In Portugal, our regulatory team plays a direct role in bringing innovative crop protection products to market – and keeping them there.

We’re looking for a Country Regulatory Manager (CRM) to own the full registration lifecycle for our Portuguese product portfolio. Reporting to the Regulatory Head Portugal, this is a hands-on, expert role with real influence: you’ll be the bridge between Syngenta’s European regulatory strategy and Portugal’s national authorities.

What you’ll do

  • Lead the planning and submission of registration, re-registration, and extension applications for crop protection products in Portugal, ensuring compliance with EU and national requirements.
  • Manage the full evaluation follow-up process – responding to authority queries, coordinating internal expert input, and driving timelines to closure.
  • Oversee regulatory compliance across labels, databases, and registration records (active substances, production sites, packaging, co-formulants).
  • Coordinate national-specific actions including minor uses, emergency registrations, and label extensions.
  • Advise the commercial business on regulatory trends, portfolio risks, and competitive landscape changes in Portugal.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with national authorities (DGAV, DGE, DGS) and evaluation experts from the Ministries of Health, Agriculture, and Environment.
  • Partner with the European Regulatory and Submission teams, Product Safety, and country commercial colleagues to align priorities and deliver results.
  • Support the Field Force with regulatory guidance and act as a specialist resource on assigned regulatory focus areas.

Who you’ll work with

Internal: European Regulatory Team, Country Commercial Team, Product Safety, Product & Regulatory Biology, Stewardship, CP Marketing & Technical Support, Labelling & SDS teams.

External: National authorities (DGAV, DGE, DGS), Ministerial evaluation experts, third-party licensing partners, CropLife Portugal, academic and scientific community.

Qualifications

What we’re looking for

  • Degree in Agronomic Science or a relevant scientific discipline, plus at least 5 years’ experience in Regulatory Affairs for plant protection products.
  • Solid understanding of EU and Portuguese regulatory frameworks for crop protection.
  • Strong English (required); Portuguese fluency expected; additional languages a plus.
  • Ability to read, critically assess, and summarize complex scientific data.
  • Sharp stakeholder management – you’re comfortable navigating both internal teams and government authorities.
  • Proactive mindset: you anticipate regulatory shifts and flag them before they become problems.
  • Organised and delivery-focused, able to manage multiple dossiers and competing deadlines without losing detail.
  • Proficient with regulatory and office IT tools.
