RF Engineering Hardware Systems PCB Design Wireless Technologies Embedded Systems IoT Product Development Team Collaboration Certification Mentoring

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to express my interest in the Senior RF Hardware Systems Engineer position at Samsara. With over 5 years of experience in RF circuit and module development, I have a proven track record of delivering robust wireless solutions for high-volume products. My expertise spans 4G/5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GNSS, and UWB, and I have successfully led RF subsystem architecture from concept through mass production.

I am particularly drawn to Samsara's mission to digitally transform physical operations and the opportunity to work on cutting-edge IoT devices. In my previous role, I was responsible for board-level schematic design, PCB layout, and system-level integration, ensuring optimal RF performance and certification. I thrive in cross-functional environments and have mentored junior engineers in RF best practices.

I am excited about the chance to contribute to Samsara's hardware portfolio and help define the future of connected operations. Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Describe your experience with designing RF circuits for 4G/5G cellular systems. What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
In my previous role, I designed RF front-end modules for 4G/5G devices, focusing on optimizing efficiency and minimizing interference. One key challenge was managing thermal dissipation in a compact form factor. I solved this by using advanced PCB materials and optimizing component placement. I also conducted extensive simulations with ADS to verify performance before prototyping.
How do you approach antenna selection and integration for multi-band wireless devices?
I start by defining the frequency bands and performance requirements. Then I evaluate antenna options from vendors, considering gain, efficiency, and radiation pattern. For integration, I use simulation tools like CST to model the antenna in the device environment and iteratively tune the design. I also collaborate with mechanical engineers to ensure proper clearance and grounding.
Can you walk us through a time you had to root-cause a field failure related to RF performance?
We had a product with intermittent Wi-Fi connectivity in certain environments. I analyzed the logs and replicated the issue in the lab. Using a spectrum analyzer, I identified spurious emissions from a switching regulator coupling into the Wi-Fi antenna. I redesigned the filter and layout to isolate the noise, then validated the fix through extensive testing.
What is your experience with RF certification (e.g., FCC, CE) and how do you ensure compliance during design?
I have led multiple products through FCC and CE certification. I incorporate compliance considerations early in the design, such as harmonic filtering and shielding. I also perform pre-scan tests in our lab to identify issues before formal testing. When needed, I work closely with test labs and certification bodies to resolve any non-compliance.
How do you stay current with emerging wireless technologies and incorporate them into product roadmaps?
I regularly follow industry publications, attend webinars, and participate in vendor technology days. I also evaluate evaluation kits from leading chipset vendors to benchmark new technologies. Based on our product requirements, I propose feasibility studies and proof-of-concept projects to demonstrate value, then present findings to the product team.
