Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to express my interest in the Technical & Reporting Accountant position at Canonical. With a strong background in IFRS and financial reporting, I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to your team's IPO readiness. My experience includes preparing statutory accounts, interpreting complex accounting standards, and collaborating with audit teams.

I possess a Bachelor's degree in Accounting and am a qualified ACCA/CPA with over five years of experience in public accounting and multinational corporate environments. I am adept at using NetSuite and driving process improvements to enhance efficiency.

Canonical's mission to advance open source software aligns with my passion for technology and innovation. I am eager to bring my technical accounting expertise to your distributed team and support the company's growth.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of discussing how I can contribute to Canonical's success.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

How do you approach researching and interpreting a new IFRS standard, and can you provide an example?
I start by obtaining the official standard and any accompanying implementation guidance. I then review illustrative examples and consult with peers if needed. For instance, when IFRS 16 on leases was introduced, I analyzed its impact on our company's lease portfolio, prepared a policy paper, and trained the accounting team on the new requirements.
Describe your experience with preparing statutory accounts for multiple subsidiaries under different local GAAPs.
In my previous role, I coordinated with local finance teams across five jurisdictions to ensure compliance with local GAAP. I reconciled differences between IFRS group reporting and statutory filings, and worked with external auditors to resolve issues. This involved standardizing processes and maintaining a robust GL structure.
How would you handle a complex transaction that requires immediate technical accounting guidance?
First, I would gather all relevant facts and documents. Then I would refer to the applicable accounting standards and any previous company practices. If necessary, I would escalate to the chief accountant or seek external advice. I would document my analysis and recommendation for management review.
What steps would you take to ensure the finance team is ready for an IPO from a technical accounting perspective?
I would assess current accounting policies against SEC and IFRS requirements, identify gaps, and implement necessary changes. I would also ensure proper documentation of revenue recognition, lease accounting, share-based compensation, and business combinations. Additionally, I would lead training sessions and coordinate with auditors to address potential issues early.
Can you explain the key differences between IFRS and US GAAP that are most relevant to a global company like Canonical?
Key differences include revenue recognition (IFRS 15 vs ASC 606 is converged but has nuances), lease accounting (IFRS 16 vs ASC 842), impairment of assets (IFRS uses a single-step approach vs US GAAP's two-step), and development costs (IFRS allows capitalization under certain conditions, US GAAP generally expensed). For a global company, it's crucial to reconcile these for group reporting.
