Sample interview questions
How do you ensure an accurate and timely month-end close?

I use a documented close calendar, define owners and deadlines for each account, reconcile material balances early, investigate exceptions promptly, and perform analytical review of financial statements before finalizing the close.

Describe your approach to revenue recognition in an e-commerce business.

I first map the order-to-cash process and identify the relevant performance obligations, shipment or delivery triggers, refunds, discounts, and returns. I then reconcile source order and fulfillment data to the general ledger and document controls that support consistent recognition under GAAP.

How have you improved an accounting process using an ERP or automation?

I start by identifying high-volume manual steps and the control risks involved. I would standardize inputs, configure ERP workflows or reports where appropriate, test the output against prior results, and monitor the new process to confirm it improves both accuracy and cycle time.

What would you review when a bank or balance-sheet reconciliation does not balance?

I would confirm the reporting period and opening balance, match transactions to supporting records, isolate timing differences, review unusual journal entries, and investigate missing, duplicate, or incorrectly classified items. I would document the resolution and adjust the process if the cause is recurring.

How do you communicate accounting findings to non-finance stakeholders?

I explain the business impact first, use clear nontechnical language and concise visuals when helpful, and provide an actionable recommendation. For example, I would connect a revenue or inventory discrepancy to its operational source, decision impact, owner, and required next step.
