Key Skills

Go Terraform Kubernetes DNS CDN WAF Load Balancing Service Mesh Cloud Networking Platform Engineering

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am excited to apply for the Senior Platform Engineer (Network and Edge Services) position at 1Password. With over five years of hands-on experience in cloud networking and distributed systems, I have developed deep expertise in DNS, CDN, WAF, load balancing, and service mesh technologies. I have a proven track record of building reliable, observable infrastructure using Go and Terraform, and I am passionate about creating self-service platforms that enable engineering teams to operate independently.

At my current role, I designed and implemented a multi-region ingress architecture that improved latency by 30% and reduced incident response times through comprehensive monitoring and SLOs. I thrive in collaborative environments and am committed to a security-first approach. I would love to bring my skills to 1Password and contribute to your mission of securing digital identities.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Describe a time you designed a highly available and scalable DNS architecture. What were the key considerations and trade-offs?
I once designed a DNS architecture for a global SaaS platform using a combination of Route53 and Cloudflare. Key considerations included latency, failover, and DDoS resilience. I used anycast routing, multiple geographic zones, and health-check based failover. Trade-offs included cost versus performance and complexity of managing multiple providers.
How would you approach building a self-service platform for other teams to provision their own networking resources?
I would create a comprehensive abstraction layer using Terraform modules and internal APIs that encapsulate best practices for security and reliability. This would include predefined configuration templates, guardrails via policy as code (e.g., Sentinel), and a simple CLI/UI for engineers to request resources. I'd also implement monitoring and feedback loops to iteratively improve the platform.
Explain your experience with service mesh technologies. How would you evaluate whether a service mesh is appropriate for an organization?
I have worked with Istio in production, managing mTLS, traffic routing, and observability. A service mesh is appropriate when you need fine-grained traffic control, security, and observability across many microservices, but it adds complexity. I would evaluate based on the number of services, compliance requirements, and team maturity to operate the mesh.
How do you ensure that network infrastructure is observable and meets reliability targets?
I define SLIs and SLOs for key metrics like latency, error rate, and throughput. I implement comprehensive logging, metrics, and tracing using tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and Jaeger. I also set up dashboards and alerts for proactive monitoring, and regularly conduct blameless postmortems to drive improvements.
Walk me through how you would debug a sudden increase in latency for users in a specific region.
First, I'd check dashboards for any anomalies in upstream dependencies, such as CDN or database latency. Then I'd review recent changes to configuration or code. I'd use distributed tracing to identify the problematic service and isolate the issue. If it's network-related, I'd examine packet loss, routing changes, or congestion. Finally, I'd implement a fix and roll out a patch, followed by a postmortem.

If you’re excited about the opportunity to contribute to the digital safety of millions, to work alongside a team of curious, driven individuals, and to solve hard problems in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, then we want to hear from you. Come join us and help shape a safer, simpler digital future.

Our Network & Edge Services team owns the networking infrastructure that powers 1Password — from DNS resolution and CDN edge protection through ingress, service mesh, and the wide-area connectivity that links our infrastructure together.

As a Senior Platform Engineer on this team, you will play an important role in building the self-service platforms and reliable, secure network foundation that 1Password depends on. Your responsibilities include designing and delivering network infrastructure across DNS, edge, ingress, and service mesh; building the tooling and abstractions that let other engineering teams provision and manage their own networking needs without depending on the NES team; and ensuring the network is observable, hardened, and resilient by default. You will work closely with cross-functional partners to understand their needs and keep them aligned on priorities and progress, while contributing to a team culture of shared ownership, direct feedback, and continuous improvement.

How we’re using AI today

Our Engineering, Product, and Design teams are thoughtfully integrating AI across the full software and product development lifecycle to move faster without sacrificing quality or security. In practice, that looks like engineers using AI-assisted coding tools to accelerate reviews and catch bugs earlier, product managers synthesizing user research at scale, and designers rapidly prototyping and iterating with AI-generated mockups. We approach AI the same way we approach security: with clear principles, human accountability at every consequential decision point, and rigorous evaluation before anything ships to customers.

This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US.

What we’re looking for:

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with cloud networking and distributed systems at SaaS or similar scale, with expertise in architecting and debugging across the stack.

  • Deep knowledge of internet architecture and modern web services (DNS, CDN, WAF, Load Balancing, Ingress, Service Mesh), and demonstrated ability to deliver reliable, observable, and secure infrastructure.

  • Proficiency in Go (or similar languages) and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), with a track record of building automation and platform tooling.

  • Experience building reliable, observable platforms, defining SLIs/SLOs, and establishing these practices as team standards.

  • On-call experience, including incident resolution and driving architectural improvements through postmortems and technical decision-making.

  • Consistently apply a security-first approach, implementing least-privilege policies, ensuring encryption in transit, and evaluating attack surfaces as part of standard design practices.

Bonus points for:

  • Experience designing self-service network abstractions (DNS provisioning, ingress configuration, network policy tooling) that empower internal teams.

  • Experience with CDN, edge protection (cache strategy, WAF, origin shielding), VPNs, and wide-area connectivity in cloud environments.

  • Familiarity with tools like Envoy, Linkerd, Cloudfront, or Cloudflare.

  • Open source contributions and experience applying compliance frameworks (SOC 2, ISO 27001) to networking and policy as code.

What you can expect:

  • Deliver network stack projects end-to-end (service mesh, DNS, ingress/egress, CDN, edge protection, L4/L7 policy). Shape technical vision, execute delivery, and maintain operability.

  • Integrate networking into self-service platforms, streamlining workflows and enabling engineering teams to operate independently.

  • Participate in the on-call rotation, driving incident resolution and continuous improvement through postmortem analysis.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners in security, platform, and product engineering. Translate their needs into well-defined work and keep them informed about priorities, progress, and risks.

  • Foster a collaborative team culture by conducting design reviews, sharing knowledge, and mentoring. We value engineers who teach as much as they build.

  • Work remotely from anywhere in the US or Canada, with periodic team meetups for planning and connection. We prioritize asynchronous communication to respect your time and focus.
