Mechanical Engineering Marine Systems HVAC Design Propulsion Systems Failure Investigation Technical Documentation AutoCAD MathCAD Secret Clearance Fluid Dynamics

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to express my strong interest in the Mechanical Engineer position at MANTECH. With over 7 years of experience in marine propulsion and auxiliary systems, I have developed expertise in complex engineering studies and HVAC calculations for naval vessels. My background includes supporting the Military Sealift Command and working with specialized ships like T-EPF and T-AKE. I am confident that my technical skills and active Secret clearance make me an ideal candidate. I look forward to contributing to MANTECH's mission of safeguarding our nation.

Can you describe your experience with HVAC load calculations and system design?
I have extensive experience performing HVAC load calculations using industry standards such as ASHRAE. For example, on a recent T-AKE project, I calculated heat loads and designed the ductwork and equipment selection, ensuring compliance with naval specifications.
How do you approach a failure investigation for a shipboard propulsion system?
I follow a systematic approach: gather data from maintenance logs and operator reports, perform root cause analysis using tools like fishbone diagrams, and collaborate with ship's force to simulate fault conditions. I then develop corrective actions and preventive measures.
What software have you used for pipe sizing and fluid flow calculations?
I have used Pipe-Flo and ANSYS for pipe sizing and fluid flow analysis. On a previous project, I used Pipe-Flo to optimize the cooling water system for an LCC class vessel, reducing pressure drop by 15%.
How do you collaborate with ship's force and other stakeholders?
I prioritize clear communication and regular meetings. For instance, during a shipyard availability, I coordinated with the engineering department and ship's crew to align maintenance schedules and ensure accurate data collection for predictive models.
Explain a time you had to interpret complex technical manuals or drawings. How did you ensure accuracy?
While working on a T-ATF vessel, I had to interpret outdated ship drawings for a propulsion retrofit. I cross-referenced with technical manuals, consulted senior engineers, and used AutoCAD to create updated schematics, which were validated through field inspections.
