Energy Markets Demand Response Utility Negotiations Grid Operations Data Centers Strategic Planning Regulatory Affairs Commercial Agreements Cross-functional Collaboration Renewable Energy

Dear Hiring Team,

I am writing to express my strong interest in the Energy Manager position at Meta. With over 10 years of experience in commercial energy markets, utility negotiations, and grid operations, I have a proven track record of developing and executing demand flexibility strategies. My expertise includes structuring bring-your-own-capacity arrangements and flexible interconnection agreements across multiple RTO markets, aligning with Meta's need for innovative energy solutions.

In my previous role at a major tech company, I successfully led cross-functional teams to integrate demand response into data center designs, resulting in significant cost savings and grid reliability. I am passionate about leveraging my technical and commercial skills to support Meta's sustainability and operational goals.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss how I can contribute to Meta's energy team.

Describe your experience with demand response programs and how you have structured commercial arrangements to maximize flexibility.
I have worked with demand response programs in PJM and CAISO, negotiating agreements that allow data centers to curtail load during peak events. For example, I structured a BYOC arrangement that provided capacity credits while ensuring operational resilience through advanced notification and automated load shedding.
How do you approach utility negotiations for flexible interconnection tariffs?
I start by understanding the utility's constraints and regulatory environment, then propose win-win solutions such as non-firm interconnection with load management. I leverage data on site load profiles and market incentives to negotiate tariffs that reduce costs and accelerate interconnection timelines.
Can you provide an example of how you managed a cross-functional project involving energy, engineering, and policy teams?
I led a project to integrate demand flexibility into new data center designs, coordinating with engineering to implement automated controls, with policy to navigate regulatory approvals, and with legal to draft service agreements. The project reduced peak demand by 15% and secured regulatory incentives.
How do you stay informed about evolving energy regulations and market trends?
I subscribe to industry publications like Platts and attend conferences such as EUCI. I also participate in working groups at RTOs and maintain relationships with regulatory staff to anticipate changes. Recently, I tracked FERC Order 2222 and assessed its impact on data center participation in DER markets.
What strategies do you use to assess and manage risk in energy procurement for data centers?
I use scenario analysis to evaluate price volatility, regulatory changes, and operational constraints. For example, I developed a portfolio of fixed-price and index-based contracts, combined with demand flexibility options, to balance cost certainty and operational flexibility. I also maintain contingency plans for grid emergencies.
