The role, at a glance.
Monzo is hiring a Senior Fraud Risk Manager to lead fraud strategy, controls, operational execution, and capability building across its UK and EU banking products. The role combines people leadership with hands-on ownership of fraud-control design, threat intelligence, analytics, investigations, and performance reporting. It requires close partnership with Product, Engineering, Data, and Operations to balance customer experience, growth, and financial-crime protection. The successful candidate will bring deep knowledge of authorised, unauthorised, first-party fraud, disputes, and UK/EU regulatory expectations. Sample interview questions
I would define shared outcome metrics across fraud losses, approval rates, false-positive rates, customer complaints, and operational workload. I would segment risks by fraud typology and customer journey, then test targeted controls rather than applying broad restrictions. Regular monitoring and controlled experiments would allow the team to adjust controls quickly as performance changes.
I would first validate the signal through transaction data, case intelligence, customer contacts, and external threat information. I would convene relevant Fraud, Product, Engineering, Data, and Operations stakeholders to quantify exposure, implement proportionate interim protections, and establish customer and operational handling. After containment, I would lead root-cause analysis, durable control design, performance monitoring, and documentation of lessons learned.
I would track fraud loss and loss rate, prevented loss, detection and investigation quality, false-positive and false-negative rates, approval and conversion impact, time to detect and contain threats, complaint outcomes, and control coverage by journey. Metrics should be segmented by product, customer cohort, channel, and fraud typology so that aggregate results do not conceal emerging risks.
I would set a clear target operating model, translate regulatory and risk requirements into measurable workstreams, and assign accountable owners with transparent milestones. I would maintain a regular governance cadence to resolve dependencies and risks, while ensuring front-line teams understand both the purpose and practical impact of the change. Coaching managers and celebrating measurable progress helps maintain engagement during demanding delivery periods.
I would engage early in product design and frame fraud controls as enablers of trusted growth rather than late-stage blockers. By using data to explain risk, customer impact, and control trade-offs, I can help teams choose proportionate solutions together. I would also agree on clear ownership, delivery milestones, monitoring, and feedback loops after launch.
