Dear Hiring Team,

I am thrilled to apply for the Hands-On Tech Lead position at your innovative real estate media company. With over a decade of experience shipping production-grade TypeScript across the full stack, I have led lean teams to deliver high-impact features with speed and quality. My expertise includes architecting custom state-machine-driven backend systems and deploying LLM-powered agents with rigorous evaluation frameworks.

I share your bias for action and thrive in ambiguous environments, turning ideas into working code quickly. I have deep experience with AI coding assistants and building guardrails to ensure reliability, which aligns with your focus on AI engineering maturity. I am eager to bring my technical leadership and hands-on skills to drive your next generation of real estate technology.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to discussing how I can contribute to your team.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Describe a time you had to make a pragmatic trade-off between shipping speed and long-term code health. How did you approach it?
In a previous role, we needed to launch a feature quickly to meet a client deadline. I prioritized building a minimal viable version with thorough testing for critical paths, while documenting technical debt. After launch, I led a sprint to refactor the most impactful areas, ensuring we balanced speed with maintainability.
How do you mathematically measure and prove the output reliability of custom agentic systems?
I use a combination of unit tests for deterministic components, evaluation metrics like precision/recall for LLM outputs, and confidence scoring based on consistency checks. I also implement traceability to log every agent decision, enabling post-hoc analysis and continuous improvement.
Explain how you would design a state-machine-driven backend for a real estate transaction workflow.
I would use a finite state machine with well-defined states (e.g., 'offer submitted', 'under review', 'accepted', 'closed') and transitions triggered by events. Each state would have associated business logic and potential side effects. For implementation, I might leverage XState or build a custom engine in Node.js with TypeScript generics for type safety.
What is your experience with advanced TypeScript patterns like discriminated unions and how have you used them to improve code quality?
I frequently use discriminated unions to model complex state shapes, such as API responses or UI states. For example, I defined a union type for async data with 'loading', 'success', and 'error' variants, ensuring exhaustive handling and reducing bugs. This pattern makes the code self-documenting and enforces correctness at compile time.
How do you ensure responsible and mature use of AI coding assistants in a team?
I establish clear guidelines: never blindly accept suggestions; always review and understand generated code; set up linters and security checks to catch issues. I also encourage the team to treat AI tools as pair programmers and to measure productivity improvements versus risks, sharing best practices in code reviews.

Job Summary

The Hands-On Tech Lead is an elite full-stack “Unicorn” Generalist who leads technical execution from the front by writing code every single day. In this role, you will sidestep endless theoretical debates and take complete ownership of end-to-end features, building high-performance TypeScript APIs, custom state-machine-driven backend systems, and the user-facing web experiences that connect them. This position requires an expert-level engineer with a strong bias to action who uses next-gen AI coding tools with extreme discipline as a mature utility, focusing heavily on AI engineering maturity to mathematically measure and prove the output reliability of custom agentic systems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Technical Execution: Guide the development of end-to-end features for a lean team, making pragmatic trade-offs between rapid shipping and long-term code health.

  • Ship from the Front: Remain heavily hands-on, writing clean, production-grade code across the entire full-stack TypeScript ecosystem.

  • Architect AI & Agentic Systems: Move past basic implementations to deploy custom agentic workflows, state machine logic, and custom RAG pipelines.

  • Engineer Trust & Reliability: Build custom guardrails, traceability frameworks, and confidence/quality algorithms to mathematically measure, test, and prove LLM output reliability.

  • Execute with Ambiguity: Turn high-level, ambiguous ideas into functional, working code rapidly, prioritizing immediate execution over lengthy architecture meetings.

  • Set Engineering Standards: Establish rigorous code review processes, testing discipline, and guidelines for the responsible and mature use of AI coding assistants within the team.

Qualifications and Job Requirements

Must-Have Technical Expectations & Core Skills:

  • Language Expertise: Expert-level TypeScript proficiency with deep comfort utilizing advanced patterns (e.g., Generics and Discriminated Unions) to maximize shipping speed.

  • Backend Foundations: Deep Node.js experience, with a strong preference for Mastra or a proven background in building custom state-machine-driven backend logic.

  • Frontend Frameworks: Strong capabilities in modern web development; our primary stack is SvelteKit, but React or Vue wizards with the engineering DNA to pick up new frameworks fast are highly welcome.

  • Production AI Experience: A track record of deploying practical LLM-powered features or agents, paired with a solid understanding of token costs, evaluations, and prompt safety.

  • Pragmatic AI Tooling: Advanced, daily use of next-gen engineering assistants (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) to automate boilerplate, combined with the strict engineering discipline to manually debug syntax walls in minutes.

  • Elite Full-Stack Generalist: The ability to jump across the entire web stack autonomously without being blocked by business-logic friction or basic syntax.

  • Remote Excellence: Outstanding English communication skills with comfort working in an async-first, highly autonomous environment.

Nice-to-Have:

  • Dynamic Assets: Experience with dynamic asset creation and automated rendering tools (e.g., PDFKit, Puppeteer).

  • Platform Integrations: Familiarity with building third-party communication links, specifically the Slack API.

  • Data Pipelines: Experience building or optimizing automated transformation scripts, data pipelines, or product analytics platforms (e.g., PostHog, Metabase).
